I don't comprehend why anyone would set out on an adventure that rates page after page of misery, and then repeats the business by rowing the Pacific. She recounts a FEW marvelous experiences, but the bulk of the book is a wallow in hardship, discomfort and self pity. Pity. Uplifting and inspirational, this is not.

This book is able to transport the reader into the North Atlantic with the author, who despite her dream to succeed based on superior planning and equipment, finds that nothing could prepare her for the harsh reality of her trip. She endures the pain and doubt of being capsized repeatedly, the numb ache of freezing conditions, the terror of broken equipment and the hunger and disgust of ruined rations. She is also surprised by the cruel loneliness and her utter fragility in the giant waves during her months at sea. As she amazes herself with the growth in her resilience, and as she pulls more and more stamina, inventiveness and courage from herself, the reader is drawn to wonder, "Will I pour even more into my own risky endeavor?" "Will I do in my life what she did in hers?" Well worth the read. Memorable. Inspiring.
