Okay, I guess we aren't fish people so maybe that explains why we didn't care much for Trout, Trout, Trout.

My children (boy and girl; 4 and 6 when this was read and reviewed) were not gripped by the need to read this book again, nor to recite any of the words--something they typically do with anything that rhymes.

Considerations:::
Trip Park's artwork is wonderful and humorous, but to get your money's worth with this one I think you have to be into fishing more than normal people. My recommendation would be to check this one out at the library first. It might be that adult fisherman (and women) would enjoy it.

The Accelerated Reading Level a generic "2".

This is just such a good book that words won't do it justice. It has to be seen and read to be truly appreciated. I know it calls itself a "fish chant", but for my four year-old son it is a "fish holler" - he loves to yell out the repetative names of the fish (to the point that we cannot read this one in the library anymore :) The pictures are amazing, giving personality to each fish that I never would have imagined. We have given this book to several grown-up friends who like to fish, and it has received rave reviews from all. I hope these two team up for more books (Ms. Sayre and Mr. Park, if you read this, do birds next, please!)

This is a must have for outdoors and fishing families. The rhyme is clever and unique and the illustrations are lively and comical, yet accurate. My child even recognizes the fish we catch with those in the book. This is fun for adults to read to their kids!

More than just a rhyming story the rhythm and cadence produces a strong chant that children fall into naturally. The rhyming pattern is set on the first two pages and follows that pattern throughout the rest of the book. The illustrations are great and create a personality for each fish while at the same time staying true to their basic shape and color so that the reader can identify them. Brightly colored, finely detailed, the illustrations themselves are exceptionally well done. If you like fish or just want to introduce your child to the fascinating world of fish Trout, Trout, Trout is highly recommended and a lot of fun just to read and leaf through. This is a great chant that keeps on your lips long after you are done with the book.

This book was used with First Graders by our music teacher. It has a lot of fish names and utilizes rhyming to construct a "chant" that the kids enjoyed. It lends itself to "beat" in the music realm and was a fun way to revisit the names of many different fish found in our local waters for our social studies curriculum.

My daughters received this book as a gift from my sister, the education coordinator for an aquarium. As such, we assumed (correctly!) that it would be both educational and fun, and were not disappointed. The illustrations are spectacular, the rhymes are catchy and easy for two-year-olds to remember and anticipate. I was initially surprised at some of the fish in the book, but after finding the very nice appendix that details information on each of them I found I learned quite a bit. I'd never heard of a frecklebelly madtom, for example, and I now know to watch out for the barbs if I ever *do* meet one!

I generally use the metric or 'do my girls request this book?' for determining a good book (this is a subjective metric, to be sure). This book is quite successful at garnering requests for multiple reads, for eliciting preemptive shouts of 'shad shad shad' (among others), and for keeping my daughters interested. They like to point out the silly things some of the fish are doing in the drawings, but I know they are learning something as well!

Even if you are not a big 'fish person' this is an excellent book. It is colorful, easy to read, fun to read over and over, and has a very informative appendix in the back with snippets about each of the fish. I happily recommend this book!

An incredibly fun-to-view book, and even more fun to read out loud. The art is stunning and ridiculously funny.

There are so many things to appreciate about this book, from the creative illustrations to the hilarious names of the fish. My kids have memorized the chant and love shouting it out along with us as we read. They are probably into fish more than your average boys (ages 5 & 8) but even my 2-year old daughter appreciates it.
