Is there a fall fair every year that you attend with your family and friends? Or maybe you can remember back in the day when
it was the highlight of the season? Miller Sanford, an 11 1/2 year old science whiz, has been looking forward to this annual September tradition and gets more than he bargained for. The innocent, gentle, and humorous characters will have you chuckling and recalling similar adventures. Suitable for middle school ages(gr.4-7) [as well as their parents], the rural setting, clever dialog and a bit of mystery, make this an excellent intergenerational bonding book.

Miller has been anticipating the Fair Friday for forever, but the day doesn't go according to plan AT ALL. Minor irritations and mishaps become high drama as he takes on big responsibilities for the first time, and Leslie Builion captures the voice and concerns of this 11.5 year old perfectly.

I love this new book by Leslie Bulion. It kept me laughing all the way through. I really didn't want to put the book down once I began reading. There is suspense, humor, and wonderful descriptions of all the characters in the story. Coming from a town with a hugely popular fair, the book brought back so many wonderful memories of the experiences my own children had every year. It will certainly engage the younger reader as well as those beyond Miller's age. I purchased 4 copies: one for each of my children (who are now young adults), one for a friend with an 11 year old, and, of course, one for me (at 60+)! What a fun and also poignant read as you follow Miller's experiences of trying hard to be a "responsible" child.

This is such a cute book by a wonderful local author. I've been going to the fair that this book is based on since I was 3 months old (I'm 30 now) and I could envision everything in my mind as I was reading this book. I know it's a kids book, but I had to read it since it based on the town I grew up in. Highly recommended.

You know, there's wacka-wacka middle grade humor, and frantic middle grade humor, and lots of fart/booger middle grade humor, but for droll, deadpan laughs you have to look around a little harder. To my mind, this book fits the bill quite nicely.

There are a lot of good things happening in these pages. We start with our hero/narrator 11-and-an-important-half Miller. He's smart, funny, observant, and fundamentally sound. The author has accomplished that rare balance - she has taken sophisticated adult observations and insights and has reworked them so that when they come from Miller he still sounds like an authentic kid. When this is done well, as it is here, you get a sort of character trifecta - adults like the kid and the humor, young readers like and identify with the kid and the humor, and the book is deeper, richer and more satisfying than just a school-daze lark.

There is real family connection here. Mom is over-protective, but comes in not for scorn but rather a sort of resigned appreciation from Miller. Dad is pretty mellow, but is competent and steady and never set up as a dope. Younger sister Penny comes across as a complete six year old, with all of the lunatic insanity that entails. There is some drama, frustration, and tension of course, but there is no angsty whining and the tone of the story is consistent and upbeat.

The supporting cast rounds out the book and actually provides support. Miller's best friend Lewis is exactly the type of wise knucklehead wingman you need for this story. Penny's equally insane first grade friends provide manic energy and plot complications in spades. Walking human disaster Andrew could carry a book all by himself.
