This book is an excellent resource for teachers! It does all the lesson planning for you. You can use all of these art projects to reinforce many different areas of curriculum, and the results are perfect for showing off at back to school night, open house, or on a school bulletin board! The materials are relatively inexpensive and easy to acquire, and most projects have examples of the student's artwork.

I am hoping there will be another book of projects from this author.

I've been working out of this book for the school year with my children. There were only 3 projects which we did not care too much to do (one required a kiln, another was more "crafty", and my dd-9 didn't want to do the African masks - she thought they were too spooky). Aside from that, we love this book! The projects are thoroughly planned with a complete supply list and plenty of color photos to follow along. Also included are pictures of other children's artwork that have completed the projects. Each project is filled with dynamic colors and fun to do. There is such a nice variety using simple art supplies from constuction paper, watercolor, tempera, pastels and markers. A few of the projects required more expensive items (like a roll of red rosin paper), but we found cheaper substitutes (colored mat/pastel paper) that worked fine. I did have to purchase small cans of spray paint, an assortment of permanent markers, aluminum embossing, foam board and sequines. I found all of these things easily at Michael's. Some projects are inexpensive, while others will cost you if you don't have these items already on hand. The aluminum embossing cost the most ($5.99 but you can get 2 pictures from it). The kids' artwork has turned out so beautiful, that I have everything up on walls all over the house! Everyone that has seen them just "ooohs" and "ahhhs" over it. I loved this book as it is very "hands on". It also contains some art history along with the projects, too. It is spiral bound, which is a plus for laying it flat while working through it. This has great appeal for the age group of 8-12. Each project is challenging, yet fun and interesting. I will add that many of the assignments take a fair amount of time to complete.Read more ›

I am an elementary school teacher for 4th, 5th and 6th graders. I have been teaching for 35 years, all subjects. I am always on the look out for books that have great ideas for teaching art concepts and have excellent projects that children love. This book is it. Every lesson is clear and concise. The children love the projects and work on them with enthusiasm. It is one the best books I have found in all my years of teaching.

This is a wonderful art book for elementary and middle school art teachers. I have a collection of many art books and I would rate this among the top ones. It is easy to follow and has great photos & examples. I also love the side binder because it lays flat. Well worth the money!

"Dynamic Art Projects For Children" is a how-to collection of imaginative art projects for children in grades 1-6, originally created and taught in Gilbert, Arizona public elementary schools. Including step-by-step instructions and colorful photographs of both process and finished art projects, "Dynamic Art Projects For Children" opens new vistas for public, private, and home school art education. Each project is described with the topic and concepts listed first followed by a project description and complete list of materials. Final photos of proud children holding their finished works add valuable testimony to the impact of "Dynamic Art Projects For Children." A guide to the ages of children best suited for each project is highlighted at the top left of each new project description, further assisting the teacher. To sum up, the use of art projects such as those suggested and described does the following: "Creating art opens a window into a child's imagination. These projects facilitate the creation of a beautiful piece of art by tapping into creativity as well as building confidence and self-esteem (back cover, "Dynamic Art Projects For Children"). In addition, many fine color photos of children's finished art projects speak clearly to the tangible results of the implementation of this well-crafted collection of creative art projects.

I'm mostly responding to the point of view in the 1 star rating; I teach elementary school art, and I think it's important to recognize that there are many factors involved here beyond 'creativity'. The typical class has many different natural abilities, learning styles, cultural backgrounds--and encouraging children to continue to explore art by helping them to feel successful is as important as creativity. Believe me, it's totally possible to encourage the children who clamor to take a project in a different direction, one that fulfills their internal vision, while continuing to use whatever step-by-step plan you have for the rest of the class. Every class has the 'naturals' and the 'I suck at art' kids--and it's easy to help the former; it's encouraging the latter that's so tricky, and using a cookie cutter lesson that helps them succeed is valid, even, I think, worthy.
