Mr. Damelio has done it again! I have been looking for a basic book on Process Mapping for quite some time because one of my client companies till recently used lengthy and complicated process documentation which had been predominantly text based- sometimes difficult to understand. I obtained a copy of "The Basics of Processes Mapping" the day it was out because I have used first edition of this book for a long time. I developed a workshop based on this book for the line supervisors and group leaders on the shop-floor and made it a mandatory reading for all participants. So far, we have converted some key processes from text based to diagram based documents, the results have been great. I will strongly recommend this book to people working in the areas of "Process Visualization" and "Process Simplification". Although the book's title is "The Basics..." yet experienced professionals will find quite a few interesting ideas and get help in fine tuning process mapping concepts. The book explains all common kinds of process maps in simple and easy-to-follow instructions.

This is one of the best books that I have read on process mapping. The author takes a step back from the usual process mapping guide approach and makes some borderline philosophical statements about the nature of work, including its traits and characteristics. He writes about work components, features and boundaries, for example, examining what work is at its core. As I read these passages I was reminded of Aristotelian analysis of reality and that philosopher's description of the Four Causes. The author then proceeds on the more traditional journey of explaining how to create a process map. Along the way, however, he also introduces the notion of a relationship map, which is a tool that starts the analysis by first identifying all the players in the process and giving a birds-eye view of how they relate. He also covers swim-lanes in good detail, showing how one can visually track the back and forth between various units. The process mapping is fairly traditional, but he keeps it at a high level, noting that it is not always necessary to go into gory details to find ways to improve a process. The best part of the book is the section where he provides seven principles for identifying process issues and advice on how to address those problems. No book that I have ever read on business process mapping provides this much how-to information.

The book could have used some editorial help. The writing is sometimes awkward and requires re-reads to ensure that the passage was understood. Also, the graphical layout can be very confusing and one has to put in extra effort to connect the text to the specific figure on a graphic.

That being said, however, I highly recommend this book for someone interested in becoming a process-mapping, waste-reducing expert.

Robert Damelio's newest book has replaced his first edition as my go-to resource for process mapping. It's chock full of great information both those new to process design and management and seasoned professionals will find very useful. I especially like the step-by-step guidelines for creating relationship maps, cross-functional process maps, and flowcharts. They are easy to understand and follow. Finally, Chapter 7 - Seven Principles to Improve Workflow - really pulls everything together by providing a knowledge-work process improvement case study. I highly recommend this book. I will be referring to it before and during each and every process improvement engagement.

I'm reading this book in Kindle app (version 3.5) on iPad 2 (iOS 6.1). Normallly a Kindle's book page take the whole screen, but with this one there're black margins on the sides both in portrait and landscape orientation. Morever, in landscape only page dispalyed instead of two. Also font size adjustment isn't available. All these mean, that screen space is used ineffectively and you have to manually zoom each page to make it more readable. It's not something you expect from an ebook.

And to look at illustrations you have to lock rotation and turn iPad each time, because they're perpendicular to the text.

I wish publishers of "The Basics of Process Mapping" put more effort into the Kindle edition. Or Amazon would control quality of Kindle books, like Apple controls quality of apps before before letting them into App Store.

I really wanted to buy this to take to work, but I prefer books that I can put on my iPad and reference anywhere. I grabbed the sample, thought it looked readable, and bought the Kindle of the book.

I'm only a chapter or two in, but on the Kindle iPad app, it looks great. No issues with reading that seem to have plagued those who have used other solutions. I don't know if the publisher fixed the formatting, or if it just looks better on the updated app, but I'd highly recommend purchasing the Kindle version to those with an iPad.

I wish the publisher would see an eBook/paper copy combo (O'Reilly does that), but in the meantime, I'm happy with this.

I think Robert Damelio did an excellent job at explaining Process Mapping and how it works, in a very simple and basic way, even to someone who has not done process maps before. The graphics in this book are wonderful, and his words are very easy to follow. I highly recommend this book.
