Never thought our story would be written in such a detailed history. Great job... although the reporting on the Labor Committee of LRUP should have been recorded for our relevance and struggle for the workers' rights of La Raza. The author might want to get a consult from a Labor Committee organizer (while still alive) for any additional printing.

I love the way this book is written. It is a report and narrative of how the La Raza Unida Party came to be a valid third party in Texas. It also details their unfortunate fall and the dirty playing of the Democratic and Republican parties in Texas to prevent their rise. Due to the neutral way the material is presented, I can safely say that this party came to be out of necessity than any form of extremism. I can also safely assume that the two parties were, and still are, largely jerks.

Due to the under representation of the Chicano people and the discrimination by many whites in Texas counties, this party rose in power to address these concerns. The result was an increased quality of life for the Chicanos in some counties of Texas.

This isn't just a book for a lonesome Chicano looking for inspiration. It is a great book for aspiring third parties to get representation on a local level. Any aspiring third party or political activist should read this book.

In case there is someone who has the limited insight to say I only support the book, not because of the material, but because I am Chicano; I am white. I am just putting this out there for the people whose mind is not expanded enough to see that Chicano empowerment is an example of empowerment for any person who is impoverished, lacking power, and desires to create a more positive life for themselves and their peers. Chicano empowerment is empowerment for everyone.

It represents how and why parties can work.

I had the privilege of indexing "La Raza Unida: A Chicano Challenge to the U.S. Two-Party Dictatorship." Dr. Navarro has told the story of the rise and fall of the third-party La Raza Unida (The People's Party) in several states: Texas, New Mexico, California, Colorado, the Midwest, and Utah, during the 1970's.
After a brief overview of the history of third parties in this country, the author concentrates on the story of La Raza. Feeling neglected by both Democratic and Republican parties, Mexican-Americans decided to demonstrate their power by establishing their own political party, first on a local level and later statewide. This book details the struggles, victories, and defeats as the party leaders valiantly worked to make inroads in the current political system.
Dr. Navarro, who heads the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of California at Riverside, is uniquely qualified to write this account of La Raza since he was himself one of its leaders. The book is rich in creating a true history of this movement, naming the men and women who sacrificed to establish a party that eventually gave way to the "politics of self-destruction." It is a one-of-a-kind history told by the only person who could write about it with both authenticity and objectivity.
With the rising Hispanic population in the United States, this book is particularly significant now since, as Dr. Navarro points out, La Raza will unite and rise again!
