Janice Gunner (Vice President of The Quilters Guild of the British Isle) has been teaching patchwork, quilting and shibori for the past 30 years. Now in "Shibori For Textile Artists", she draws upon her considerable experience and impressive expertise to introduce needlecrafters and fabric artists to the Japanese technique known as 'shibori' (from the Japanese word meaning 'to squeeze or wring'), a practice of dying gathered or bound fabric to produce vivid patterns. Enhanced with more than one hundred colorful illustrations accompanying step-by-step instructions on how to create beautiful, unique, unpredictable shibori effects, "Shibori For Textile Artists" is a complete introductory manual that will have a very special appeal and utility for quilters, embroiderers, and textile artists wanting to master the techniques of shibori in projects of their own. Featuring the historical and cultural background of shibori, and covering techniques involving tied-resist, wrapped-resist, clamp-resist, folded-resist, and pleated-resist, as well as immersion, space, and indigo dying, "Shibori For Textile Artists" will prove a highly prized and appreciated addition to personal, professional, community, and academic library Needlecraft and Fabric Arts reference collections.

While many books out there show the intricacies of expert-produced shibori, impressive but often far removed from something ordinary crafters can produce at home, this book has clear and simple instructions to produce shibori designs. Full of excellent illustrations, it is a book for practitioners of textile arts and requires little prior experience to get you started.

Not only is this book applicable for learning the basics of shibori dyeing, it is useful for the more experienced artists for advanced techniques and inspiration! There is enough history to make it interesting but not overwhelmingly filled with "too much" information...in other words, you can get straight to the processes if you want.

The photos of finished pieces and the simple drawings make it easy to mimic the results fairly closely...I was happy with the way my own dyeing projects turned out. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn this art, and also to anyone who wants to be inspired to advance their technical skills and creative endeavors. It is a good basic book to have on your bookshelf if you want to create your own unique fabrics.

This book is so beautiful. I ordered it so I could get ideas and see pictures of various tye-dying. The Japanese textile are of Shibori is just unbelievable. Although I'm no master, I enjoyed every page and picture!

I have read several books on shibori and keep on coming back to this one as my main reference point. The stitching and clamping illustrations are clear and easy to follow - as long as you have the patience for the stitching. The traditional techniques are well set out but are complemented by examples of contemporary work.

I received this book for Christmas and have really enjoyed reading it. I can't wait to try out some of the techniques. I love how the author put some history of each technique and relayed how many cultures have used very similar techniques of fabric dying and design.

Wonderful book! The instructions are clearly written and include good diagrams and drawings to help illustrate the various folding and sewing techniques used to achieve the various Shibori effects. This book is also filled with beautiful color photo's. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to expand their knowledge of this ancient Japanese art.

Thought this would be filled with more hands on photos but there are alot of instructions to read. Written a more formal/dry style so it's a bit of a chore to get through. Might be a better choice for more advanced textile artists.
