Interesting action/adventure manga with yaoi/BL hints - 4.5 stars, October 25, 2009
I really like this shounen-ai / BL from Satoru Ishihara (the creator of Kimi Shiruya - Dost Thou Know? (Yaoi)). "God of Dogs" has an interesting and involving adventure/action prisoner-gangster plot, and the only regret I had after I read is that it is only volume 1 ending with a mild cliffhanger. It's unclear to me when we'll see the concluding volume 2 in English (it was recently published in Japan in August this year). Hopefully, June (US publisher) will finish the series! Also, there's a prequel to God of Dog, "Charisma", four volumes published in Japan only (see comments to R.Parklane review). However, when I read God of Dogs, I didn't realize there is a prequel, and it did not prevent from enjoying the first volume. I personally found the book very action-packed, fast-paced and exciting but NOT confusing. (But of course, I'd really appreciate if I could read its prequel, Charisma, too... just because I'm very curious about all the characters at this point, so the more volumes the better...).
The book does not have any explicit yaoi (m/m) content, but it has a very obvious homo-erotic subtext, thus I hope more will come in the next volume. Even if it doesn't, this is still an entertaining adventure book, and the prison escape scenes - as well as all the situations with all that Chinese mafia craziness - were just hilarious (and not necessarily in a comedic sense, though there were a number of comedic moments). I guess it's a great book for a BL AND Takashi Miike or Hong Kong action flicks fan, as it combines both genres. Regarding homoerotic subtext: I enjoyed all that unexpected "seduction" that one of Chinese mafia brothers shows to his captive, one of the main characters ("That went straight to my crotch...I totally want to [...] you right now"...etc).
Overall, an entertaining manga, though not really a yaoi at this point, more of a gangster/prison-type story with some shounen-ai hints. To me, it was similar to Wild Adapter Volume 1 (v. 1) in its combination of BL with a more mainstream action genre.

Set-up to a series ? 3.5 stars, October 22, 2008
This one must surely be the first volume of a series with the introduction of so many characters. Briefly we have: Chinese mafia under the leadership of a complex, twisted and powerful family, FBI, NYPD (a potential uke with a conscious in this police force), gangsters and our hero with his complicated past including a beloved elder brother in need of special care. You really need to concentrate to follow the story as there are so many characters and subplots within the main plot.
The obviously main characters are interesting but their roles are limited as there is so much going on.
However you won't be bored. Far from it and I am left frustrated at the last page wondering if there is any continuation. No sign on the cover saying this is Vol 1 ! A hint from the publisher would have been appreciated.
And this is no Yaoi, but hints of BL here and there with potential to develop into Yaoi ?
The artwork is nice with all the manly hunks! Anyone know whether this is a series ?
