This unorthodox book combines anthropological detective story, cultural history, pharmaceutical research as the author recounts his quest to find Soma, the original drug used in ancient religious rituals for attaining altered states of ecstasy... a drug that may be extinct. We are taken on a wild and enlightening journey through the annals of myth, religion and altered states of reality. This was not about just searching for the ultimate high, but a genuine philosophical quest to understand the ineffable, and the means ancient peoples used to attain it. Highly recommended.

Ever since I discovered Terence McKenna back a few years ago (The Invisible Landscape: Mind, Hallucinogens, and the I Ching, The Archaic Revival: Speculations on Psychedelic Mushrooms, the Amazon, Virtual Reality, UFOs, Evolution, Shamanism, the Rebirth of the Goddess, and the End of History, and others), I've been looking for books that continue his legacy and tell the tales of entheogens in a fashion that portrays their importance to history, mythology, religion, psychology, and, occasionally, the writer's own life. In "Blue Tide" I have found just such a book. Mike Jay is more adventurous than I am but he seems to enjoy digging into the same obscure nooks and crannies of crypto-sociology that I do.

In this book, he describes his decades-long quest into the background and nature of Peganum harmala (syrian rue), which he believes is the core of the ancient vedic drink of the gods (and men) soma. In doing so, he tells a great story of exploration, laced with wonder and intrspective skepticism. He does so in a way that has me re-thinking several of my ideas about enthogens and shamanism yet has stimulated new ideas that McKenna with his story-telling excess never could.

Mike Jay takes you from London to the Amazon, Middle East, and Tibet / Nepal; from Ancient India to modern psychopharmacology. He also does some pharmaceutical exploring no less hair-raising and dangerous than free-climbing or bungee-jumping. If you are already a psychonaut, then you should try reading this book. If you are not a psychonaut, then reading this book may give you some clues as to why they are important if generally unrecognized contributors to modern culture.
