I sat down on a Sunday morning to casually glance through what I thought was just another coffee table photography book. Several hours later, thoroughly relaxed and enlightened, I closed Philadelphia Then and Now, having deliberately devoured every word, every image, every comparison-both visual and written, cover to cover. What fun it was to go back and forth. The effort taken to capture identical images was evident page after page. The attention to obscure and amusing snippets of historical detail tied the "then" black and white photos and the "now" colorful photos together perfectly.
Treat yourself to a Sunday morning journey to Philadelphia-Then and Now.

This is a beautifully done book. On one side of each page turn is the way a site USED to look circa 1900s and later, and the way it appears now. At the top of each page is the name of the location/site and beneath the pictures are descriptive paragraphs which give a bit of the history and current usage of the building(s).

It has made me very "homesick" for Philly - having been born and raised there and only recently having moved to Tennessee. Nothing has history like Philly and these beautiful pictures bring it all back to me.

I guess you could consider it a "coffee table" book because of it's size and the quality of the paper used, but for me, it's a reference as well.

You'll never regret buying it.

I knew Caitlin would jump all over this book - as shes employed PT, she has the opportunity to browse old bookshops in Philly (she's getting a unique view, sunce she grew up the deep South) and NYC. We've enjoyed rainy days at the Strand (bookshop must-see in NYC). I've given her 1st Editions, rare books, and her taste is, imo, rather refined - there's always a book in her hand. She fell in love w/this one, she found the photo chronology fascinating and the writing to be engaging, surprisingly witty at points and charming overall. She entertains casually & friends are always commenting on the book.

Being from Philadelphia I appreciate pictures of what many my age (86) never knew existed. It would be nice to see more pictures of working class neighborhoods and things like the "Chinese Wall" and the RED Light" district

This is the second book I have ordered in this series that arrived and a little dinky book about 1/3rd the size of the regular coffee table book. How can you even see the details? I won't have this happen again, I will check dimetions before I buy.

I like this book, but I wish that each picture was dated so a reader could instantly know what era each picture came from. Also, I've passed so many buildings in Philadelphia that I wish were in the book...maybe that just means it would be great to have an expanded version. I like the text that accompanies each photo.

I bought two copies of this book. One for my husband who loves history and since we live in Philly knew he would love it.
I bought another copy for a 14 yr old boy who had his confirmation & knew he liked history as well. He also lives in Philly so this book has been a learning experience for him as well. Recommend this book highly.

This is a really unique collection of photos from the last 150 years in Center City Philadelphia with recent photos taken at the same location. Would make a great gift for someone with Philadelphia ties.
It was interesting to see how things have changed - in many places for the better. Center City towards the Ben Franklin Parkway was a dirty grimy place at the turn of the century. The Parkway was a stroke of genius. The Art Museum used to be a water holding area.
