I imagine if you are picking up a book like Urban Mindfulness you probably already have some type of affinity for Buddhism. As someone who just observes "religions" and doesn't practice them I don't necessarily find this book as useful as I want it to be for me. Kaplan is saying a lot of things people already KNOW, but they can't put into practice. Yes, I know when I'm on the crowded train that I shouldn't stress about it because I will eventually get off, but in the moment I need a coping mechanism not logic. I think because I know Kaplan is a doctor, I expected a tad more psychology injected in - though he definitely does bring some into the mix. To be fair I think this book does service its purpose of "mindfulness". If nothing else, Kaplan is bringing to my attention that I am not mindful of things while I'm traveling through the city and rushing to work and drinking my coffee, and emailing, texting, it goes on. So I feel that it doesn't give me the skills to work on changing my disconnect with my world, but it does gently remind me that I am disconnected. Something I LOVE about this book is how its written. Kaplan points out early on that this book is not necessarily meant to be read in chapter order. There are 50 small chapters broken out in to sections that will be pertinent to the part of your life you might be disconnected from, home, work, etc. It's a handy way to divide up information; to not make you feel overwhelmed by needing to read all of this book to understand how to get back in touch with your reality. You can easily skip to the chapter about kids or work, and get some quick insight. I can see me returning to this book when I am feeling desperate and knowing that I can easily find one part that will address my current concern. Needless to say, I read through all the chapters anyway!Read more ›

My friends classify me as a no-nonsense resilient person. Regardless, working/living in the Bay Area has added a few grey hairs to my head and possibly shaved a few weeks off of my life. As much as I love this city, I realize that I miss out on some of the simpler things in life. This book is a good reminder of how best to appreciate my surroundings and tune-out the the bad. I liked some of the recommendations it had, but I was left thirsting for me. I'm wondering if the author will come out with a follow up that goes deeper into dealing with crying babies, jerk cab drivers and loud neighbors. Overall, I recommend this book to fellow urban ninjas like myself.

This book provides some excellent tips on how to incorporate mindfulness practices into the fast paced city life. I recently moved out of NYC, in part because of the city's chaos, and after reading this book I almost want to try the city out again! Each chapter provides unique advice relevant to a particular issue, (e.g., noisy neighbors) and guides you on how to use such stressful moments as opportunities for practice. Ultimately, mindfulness practice helps cultivate QUALITY into every moment of your life, and it helps the people around you too! By using some of Jonathan's everyday suggestions, such as being more mindful of the way we throw out our trash, we can make a big difference in somebody else's day. For example, instead of just throwing out your half empty coffee in the trash, drain all the liquid first so that the dedicated workers who keep our city clean don't get too messy. It's little things like this that can make such a big difference in somebody else's day, and spark a positive chain reaction! Also, I loved the format of this book. The chapters are laid out in such a way that you don't have to read the book straight through, but rather you can focus on what parts are particularly relevant to you. If you are serious about wanting to make changes in your life, and you are willing to put in the work, I think this book is a great tool to get you started! - Alyssa

Excellent book! As a psychotherapist in a New England town, this book is still of great help to my clients. It addresses many universal issues that cause distress in the mind no matter where the body is. The chapters are short and to the point. It's a good handbook to read again and again; before encountering a situation or after, when a difficult mind state arises.

When I started implementing Buddhist practices to my everyday life, people would ask me "How can you practice Buddhism in such a busy, frenetic place?" Well NYC is the perfect to place to practice and this book gives all the examples why. At every second we are given an opportunity to be mindful and fully in our present moment and Dr. Kaplan's book is a great resource for trying to cultivate our mindfulness deeper, at every turn. It is s very accessible read, perfect for those who are just starting to cultivate their mindfulness practice. But it also makes for a great refresher to those who have already tapped into their Buddha-nature. If you are looking for a clear and comprehensive guide to cultivating a more peaceful, mindful way of living in an urban environment, please pick this book up!
