Great Update!, February 24, 2008
I love that Eat Out, Eat Right is small enough to fit into your purse or in your briefcase (or glove compartment) because that's what it's all about--being prepared when you're dining out--so take it along. It's so smartly organized that you can open it quickly to the type of restaurant you're considering and get exactly what you need to know to make smart choices. Kudos to Hope and her publisher for this updated third version, because it pays to be prepared when dining out, and as she notes in her "Trends" chapter, that's what Americans are doing with increasing frequency.
Hope doesn't tell us not to eat out--she tells us HOW to eat out and stay healthy, too. The book begins by defining what a healthy diet is, and then shows the readers how to translate goals into dining skills and strategies. Hope has a deliberate mind--and guides the reader first by showing us how restaurants make it so easy to gain weight and then showing better options. Each cuisine is first defined and described, then we see a 'nutrition snapshot', which can be really scary! We learn 'green flag' and 'red flag' preparation terms (very valuable and once learned makes menu reading extremely simple--you can zero in on best dishes when you know the lingo), and I especially like the 'May I take your order' sections, with best sample meals and nutritional analyses.
And don't forget beverages, and so many diners do. Coffee drinks and alcoholic beverages can be diet dilemmas, demonstrated here--with ideas for lowering fat and sugar, and calories.
Fast food isn't all created equal--and from salad bars and soups to Thai, Deli and even fine-dining, readers learn the difference between a nutrition nightmare and an acceptable entrée or side dish.

Compact, easy-to-carry healthy restaurant eating guide has it all!, February 22, 2008
Wow! I got my copy of Eat Out, Eat Right and I'm not letting it go. The book was recommended on my online weight loss program. As a traveling salesman who is on highways and in metro areas days...and plenty of nights, this book is both an eye-opener and an able assistant. The book divulges the gory nutrition facts of the sandwiches, burgers, and ethnic favorites I consumed too often. I had no clue that foods I thought were OK choices -tuna sandwich, fish sandwich, Caesar salad, sweet and sour pork, chicken quesadilla and more - are loaded with fat and calories. Eat Out, Eat Right's healthy restaurant eating skills are teaching me how to choose healthy foods and control portions...oh yes, a difficult task. Plenty of practical tips and tactics fill the pages of cuisines-specific chapters, from sandwich shops to burger joints and my ethnic favorites of Mexican and Chinese. The book's home is now my glove compartment!

A must read for those who eat out frequently, February 21, 2008
This book is a "must read" for those who eat out frequently and are mindful of healthy eating. The third edition has just been published.
Hope Warshaw, MMSe, RD, CDE does a masterful job of providing practical and realistic guidelines for making healthier menu choices from a wide variety of foods and cuisines, which includes information on popular fast-casual restaurants such as Applebee's and Chili's.
The book which is in paperback is compact and easy to take with you when traveling or just eating out! Happy and healthy dining.
