When you broke a bone, let's say your arm, it was a real crisis and crying time for sure! The trip to your doctor's office or the hospital was pretty hurried and the pain you felt was intense. After the X-rays the doctor probably talked to you and your parent or caretaker and told you what kind of a fracture it was, how long it would take to heal, and other general instructions. If they told you that you had something like a greenstick fracture or a bowing fracture, you may not have any idea what they are they are talking about or even care when you are in pain. So what exactly happens when that bone is healing?

Don't worry, you'll heal in time. The six superheroes involved in this process are called osteoblasts, blood cells, neutrophils, macrophages, fibroblasts and stem cells. You have two different kinds of bones. One is called compact or cortical bone (the tough hard one) and the other is called spongy bone (this can be found inside compact bones.) When you break a bone, blood, the first superhero, rushes to the scene when your "damaged bone cells give off a chemical that is a signal to the rest of the body that help is needed." As you learn about this complicated healing process, you can actually see what is going on with fantastic photomicrographs that were "taken with a scanning electron microscope (SEM)." At each stage in your healing process you will know exactly what is going on in your body . . . maybe even as much as the doctor does!

When a child breaks a bone it can lead to short-term stress and he or she can become very upset. This book is very well written and can be just the thing to soothe the mental processing as well as give your child the understanding of what is going on in his or her body.

My son loves this series- makes complicated concepts accessible and fun. As he gets older, there are sections we can add when we read the book.

A little abstract but still a fun way to introduce these biology topics. The pictures and text were a bit too busy for me and my kids.
