Jim Cirillo has been a personal friend since 1998. Weeks before he passed into eternity, he gave me a phone call. At 76 years of age, he was working on yet another project, one geared to getting the good guys home at the end of their shifts.

Paul Kirchner, a superb reporter and student of people who have been successful in battle, has done a service for those who didn't know Jim. Jim's warmth and good humor comes through -- I can hear his voice telling the stories Paul faithfully documented. While Jim won 17 gunfights in his career -- a grim business -- he was never superior, stand-offish, arrogant. In fact, as Paul reflects, here's a guy who could only be portrayed in film by a cross between Robert DeNiro and Rodney Dangerfield!

His self-deprecating style, his devotion to friends, family and the mission, all combined to make him one of the most relevant souls of the 20th Century. Paul faithfully records Jim's work to create better fight-stopping ammunition, easier to use sights and his development of technique as well as his work as a police firearms instructor.

Jim's contributions to the field are without peer. He was truly, as Jeff Cooper called him, "Cirillo the Great."

Jim Cirillo has rightfully achieved legendary status as one of the most battle tested gunfighters of the modern era from his service on NYPD's long disbanded Stake Out Unit.

Those who've read Cirillo's own book, Guns, Bullets, and Gunfights or who have simply heard stories about him will surely enjoy this volume. Kirchner is a fine writer and a meticulous researcher. There is far more interesting biographical material in Kirchner's book than in Cirillo's own book.

Anyone who is a fan of Jim Cirillo or of "deadly men" generally will find this a fascinating book.

Kirchner has outdone himself - this book is a
terrific companion to Cirillo's own "Guns, Bullets
and Gunfights". It's funny, sarcastic, cynical,
informative, riveting in many instances, and a great
look into the workings of an elite police unit.
It's also a sobering revelation into what evidently
goes through a police officer's mind when he's
face-to-face with an armed assailant bent on murder,
and he has about half a millisecond to decide
whether or not to shoot, who might be on the other
side of his bullets, and if it's safe to pull the
trigger.

I have all of Kirchner's books, and they're great.
But this one is by far, in my opinion, his best one
yet.

This book was written and published after Cirillo's death, and you can see it was a response to reader demand.

Nonetheless it is a thrilling read, and provides both sides of the argument - should you fight armed robbers on their own terms, and blast them as soon as they twitch an eyelid, or should they be taken alive, counselled, educated, found jobs, and generally turned around somehow into good citizens? Many shooting scenes are described, where we find that armed offenders are in fact more ready to shoot someone than the police are, any day.

Many citizens expect the cops to protect THEM and not the offender, and this is no doubt how the store-owners and customers feel. Others think that the cops should fire warning shots galore, shoot the weapon out of the robber's hand, etc etc. You are given the chance to choose. The truth lies somewhere between.

Having shot so many armed robbers, the inevitable happens - Cirillo's team is disbanded for political reasons. Yet the author does mention that the great majority of the gunmen and robbers shot are black. Does it point to something? Who knows?

As a retired LEO and now a civilian Fire Arms trainer I found the book to be very accurate. It brought back a lot of memories. It's too bad Jim Cirrillo left us so soon. I'm sure he had many other stories to tell. He is an American Hero.

The author, the late Jim Cirillo, give you a fascinating look at his life as a member of the not only the NYPD (New York Police Department) but also a highly regarded member of the very dangerous stakeout squad from which the stories in this book come from. Not only are these stories a fascinating look at the author's life, but also highly informative in regards to using a gun in self-defense and perhaps even more importantly, how to stay alive when someone or several someones are trying to kill you. The author doesn't pull any punches and tell it like it is with no sugar coating whatsoever.

If you are at all interested in the use of a firearm for self-defense, this is definitely a book that you will want to read. However, this is not a technical manual on how to shoot, but a telling of actual shootouts and the lessons learned from them. Just as important as, if not more so, learning how to shoot.

I highly recommend this book along with Mr. Cirillo's other book, Guns, Bullets, And Gunfights: Lessons And Tales From A Modern-Day Gunfighter.
