"The Reincarnation of Peter Proud" is a suspense fiction that explores what it would be like to be reincarnated into a new person with vivid and powerful memories of what life was like in a prior incarnation.

Living in the 1970's, the "Age of Aquarius," as author Max Ehrlich likes to point out, Dr. Peter Proud is a young California professor whose repeat dreams come to obsess him. While he remembers his own childhood and adolescence as quite normal, it is these powerful nighttime dreams that he dreads for their vividness and violence. Young Dr. Proud has the sense that he lived a prior life not long before and died a violent death.

Author Max Ehrlich was a writer of "Twlight Zone" episodes and of "Star Trek" episodes. He masterfully brings out that eerie "Zonal" feeling in "The Reincarnation of Peter Proud."

Seeking out the help of clairvoyants and professionals alike, Dr. Proud is hypnotized, electric-shocked, has a reading done by a seer and makes use of parapsychological techniques in an effort to delve into his past. Chance along with these techniques eventually lead him to the city of his past life, his home and certain key venues. What this leads to can't be told without giving things away.

This suspense novel was made into a movie which also came out in the 1970's. It's a great film that does justice to a spooky, cult classic.

Peter Proud has been having strange dreams. To relieve himself of these dreams, sometimes nightmares, he goes to a sleep study center. The researchers performing the study tell him that he isn’t dreaming. Instead they are hallucinations or maybe memoirs. He is told that the human mind must dream every night or the person will go mad. Frightened by that thought, Peter starts searching for answers. He goes to a spiritual counselor who tells him about his past lives, all but the last life. When Peter asks about his present life the spiritualist says he has been chosen as a prophet. He then goes to a parapsychologist who hypnotizes him to regress him back to his last life and is fascinated and excited by the discovery. If Peter can explore his last life and prove that he was another person before this life then he would be the founder or a whole new spiritual movement. Unfortunately, every new religion needs a martyr.

This is an intelligent and well researched novel. The author explores ideas such as “Oninnonk” an Iroquois belief that dreams are important and must be acted upon. Of course the other important topic of the novel and the reason I read the book is reincarnation. Ehrlich covers all the bases; children describing places they have never been, meeting a stranger and having an immediate rapport, having an experience of going somewhere for the first time and feeling like you belong there, child prodigies who master things that take most people years of practice. Even Bridey Murphy, a housewife in the 1950s who was regressed to a past life in 19th Century Ireland, is brought up from time to time. All of these concepts are what made this an interesting read for me.

The disappointing part of the book is that it is a thriller.

Purchased this book as a gift for a friend who is interested in reading novels involving reincarnation and past lives. The book was well received but I do not know my friend's opinion of it. When I purchased it, I bought it on the good reviews given by others who read and enjoyed it.

I first saw the movie years ago at the theater and found it thoroughly chilling. I have searched for the movie on DVD time after time yet came up with nothing. When I came across the book on Kindle it was a too good to be true. I hear there is going to be a remake soon but still would love to have this one on DVD for my collection.

I read this book years ago and saw the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it then. For some strange reason, I started thinking about this man swimming in a lake and, well I don't want to spoil the end, but found the book, bought it and re-read it. Quick read very interesting to think about the possibility of being reincarnated. I enjoyed it.

I read this as a teenager and have never forgotten it - was talking to a friend about reincarnation and bought this for her for Christmas. Mentioned it in front of another friend that I'd gone to high school and she loved it as well. I'll be borrowing it back and re-reading!!

Dr. Peter Proud, a twenty-something associate professor of anthropology at The University of California, Los Angeles, has recurring dreams, or rather nightmares, which are so vivid he wakes his terrified girlfriend by screaming at the top of another man’s voice. It’s not just one dream but several; the details of which are engraved on his memory. He’s losing sleep, weight, his health and, in danger of losing his girlfriend! In the worst dream someone, a woman, is trying to kill him. He needs to make the dreams stop so he consults, an eminent psychiatrist who cannot help him. He is at his wits end. And then he consults a colleague in the department of sleep studies and thus begins an obsessive quest to uncover his nightmares’ origins.

The tale is well written although, in terms of narrative style and some of the evident prevailing attitudes of the time, it may come across as somewhat dated. There is, to be true, something of the ‘X-Files’ about it or, going even further back, a feel of ‘One Step Beyond’, ‘Outer Limits’, and ‘The twilight Zone’ but probably, quite understandably so since it was first published in 1974!

Nevertheless, it’s a genuine page-turner and, especially for those who enjoy material that might be characterized as a bit ‘quirky’, thoroughly recommended!
