The title of the first publication of this book (in 1990) was The Seduction of Madness: Revolutionary Insights into the World of Psychosis and a Compassionate Approach to Recovery at Home. The current book has two added appendices, the first of which relates the author's practice of psychotherapy to his spiritual journey. He notes that to be open as a therapist is not so easy because of the therapist's dread of recognizing a loneliness within, not unlike the loneliness of the patient. He says: "It is a paradox, yet true, that the journey of uncovering basic aloneness could lead to feeling intimate with all beings. . . When the despair of loneliness is transformed - or purified, we could say - into the heroism of aloneness, it becomes a reservoir of energy that makes exchanging oneself for others possible and, without knowing it, one's innate compassionate nature flourishes."

Podvoll's intention with this book is to inspire more compassionate care for the mentally ill, which, to one degree or another, he sees as applying to all of us. The book relates four stories of madness, each largely recorded by the person who experienced it. These are cases in which the individuals kept careful written records of both their inner experience and the events happening to them - sometimes involving brutal mistreatment in mental health facilities. Our treatment of those suffering psychosis hasn't improved much today, Podvoll says, because we are all at some level aware that psychosis is an ever-present possibility for anyone. This triggers an instinctive fear of insane people and makes us resist genuine empathy.

As a possible model of recovery and care, Podvoll offers the Windhorse Project of home recovery.

Who knew that psychosis is recoverable? This book gives us great insight into how we all are insane and sane in a multitude of different ways. Reading this gave me much empathy for the mentally ill and helped me explore my own insanity. Be careful when you read it. Exchanging with this material can be intense.

Great book and a refreshing compassionate approach to working with mentally ill individuals. Based on work that was done through Naropa University - a buddhist approach but also useful for any denomination.

This is a paradigm changing book. The first portion of the book gives four case histories that provide the basis for a refreshing look at the potential for real and lasting recovery from 'mental illness'.

I am writing this for those of us who are trying to recover from insanity. The tips and signs , which we love, should be extremely helpful. As we are all looking how to tell the difference of real and not.

I only started to read this but felt the need to "Get The Word Out"If you are looking for a promising book; read this.
