The world of magic is filled with unique individuals. Over the last 150 years there have been some amazing people with equally amazing stories. However, most of these folks never get their story told. The exception has been Houdini. He has been fortunate to have had more books written about him than any other magician dead or alive.

That trend seems to be changing. On June 1st, 2012 a new book debuted called The Amazing Harry Kellar Great American Magician by Gail Jarrow. This is the first biography about Kellar written for the general public. This book is published by Calkins Creek/Boyd Mill Press and is considered a children's book but frankly it's so well done it would appeal to people of any age interested in magic.

The Amazing Harry Kellar Great American Magician is 9 x11.5 in size and is 96 pages long. It's broken down into 12 chapters with several pages of references afterwards. Within the book you'll encounter 27 full color reproductions of some of Kellar's famous posters. There are also many other b/w photos of other magicians along with numerous sidebars which give the reader additional information to give a better understanding of the events at that time.
An interesting side note, the author of the book, Gail Jarrow, was introduced to the world of Harry Kellar by Lisa and Rich Gensheimer. They are the producers of a documentary on the life of Harry Kellar called "American Mystic: The Magical Life of Harry Kellar."

Mike Caveney and Bill Meisel, authors of the book KELLARS WONDERS were also helpful in the production of the book. And finally, a living relative of the Kellar family, Harry Kellar `Ted' Blakely, the great great nephew of Kellar, shared his insights with the author as well.

Harry Kellar was born in Erie Pennsylvania in 1849.

Harry Kellar doesn't have the modern name recognition of Harry Houdini, but he was just as well known (or more so) in his own time. This book gave me a fascinating introduction to Heinrich Keller, a hardworking man with a gift for illusions and showmanship. Jarrow keeps the story moving, as Heinrich Keller becomes Harry Kellar, who performed his tricks and illusions around the world from around 1865 to 1908. Author Gail Jarrow does a fabulous job of keeping the story interesting. I wasn't quite sure of what to make about references to Kellar hiring people who "knew how the illusion worked" (p.78) as it sounds a bit like bribing. On the other hand, it sounds like magicians borrowed, shared or stole illusions from each other fairly regularly (one of the many interesting take-aways from my reading of this story.)

The photos and "look" of this book are fantastic. Brilliant color reproductions of the posters Kellar used to advertise his shows, along with historic black and white photos transported me into Kellar's time. I appreciated the great care Jarrow has taken to dig out details from Kellar's life and his show, and organize them in a readable way. Kellar's fame didn't happen by accident, and reader's will learn about how first impressions count, the value of hard work, overcoming setbacks (Kellar lost his entire life savings when a ship sank) and the key element of practice, practice, practice by reading this book.

I heartily recommend this book 'tweens and teens (and adults) looking for a great read about an interesting man. The book ends with source notes, a time line, sources for more information and an index.

There are so many books about Harry Houdini for young people. I was delighted to discover this new, immensely readable and attractive biography of a contemporary of Houdini's, Harry Keller, equally or even more famous during his lifetime than Houdini but known these days only by insiders in the magic community.

Jarrow traces Kellar's life and career, which spanned half a century and five continents. After running away from home at the tender age of 10, he winds up living with a minister who wants to educate him to become a preacher. After attending his first magic show, however, Harry wanted nothing more than to go on the stage himself, and managed to get himself a job as a magician's assistant. His magic career took him all around the world, traveling by ship, train, stagecoach, or even on the back of a mule. Renowned for his elaborate illusions, variants of which are still performed today in Las Vegas magic extravaganzas, Harry never rested on his laurels, but was always looking for new and even more amazing illusions for his shows. Many of these fascinating illusions are described and pictured in this biography.

Special kudos go to the designer of this large format, full-color book, which incorporates many of Kellar's original posters, as well as fonts in the text that echo the look of the antique posters. Kellar's posters often featured him with devils and imps, thought to be the source of the magician's incredible powers. The book features many contemporary photographs as well as sidebars about diverse topics touched on in the text, such as magic history, spiritualism, and entertainment in Kellar's time. Back matter includes a timeline, source notes, a comprehensive bibliography, an index, and a list of resources such as websites, magician organizations, and DVD's.

This is an ideal book for leisure reading for young people who prefer nonfiction, and also provides plenty of facts for school biography reports.
