"Man is a river...never the same for two consecutive seconds" says Wei Wu Wei in this collection of enlightening essays. Packed with insights and encouragement, every page of this book has something to offer. Why Lazarus Laughed focuses on what Zen, Advaita, and Tantra have in common; what essential doctrines they share. This focus provides a refreshing look at the common questions that we all share as human beings and gives us the inspiration we need to continue on our own personal journey of understanding. Wei Wu Wei helps us come to terms with and accept the inherent uncertainty in our uncertain world. Anyone needing inspiration on their search towards self-discovery should be sure to read this book at least twice!

Generally I am comfortable reading about spiritual aspects of our (internal) experiences yet this one was a bit cryptic and not written in an interesting way. So after reading about half way through I gave up on reading it any further.

Its ironic that I bought this book for some advaita and in here Wei Wu Wei gives us a mechanism for reincarnation that's compatible with the 'not 2'! Its ironic because, contrary to what jnani's and the masters say, the experts all say that reincarnation is impossible in advaita and that it's an illusion, and so they say that when Ramana Maharshi or Nisargadatta ever mentioned reincarnation or re-birth, they spoke at the level of the listener to be compassionate.

Wei Wu Wei points out the advaita teaching that we are not our thoughts, or personality, or mind. These are not 'I', and there isn't re-birth for 'I' because the 'I' is unborn. Yes, that is clear. But our false personality is still there in the dream and like the way the pollen from a flower floats away; thoughts, memory, personality, float away and enter another body-mind mechanism. It is all in maya, like the personality and the body and trees are in maya. So those kids in India who remember past lives are still only in the dream and re-birth process in still only in the dream, like a blade of grass is in the dream. So the phenomenon is real because even though the eternal is unborn, mind, which is fleeting, manifest and the way a blade of grass appears out of manifestation, well that personality we take ourselves to be re-appears in manifestation and this is the phenomenon people notice in villages in india.

Wei Wu Wei says it beter that I. I've always wondered about Ian Stephensons research. Well Wei Wu Wei gets me thinking. He's a truly original writer that give the reader much food for thought.

Love all of Wei Wu Wei series, especially 1st 5 or 6. Writes in small snippets, uses ALL major Spiritual Masters from all traditions. But it's all Non-Duality & he "knows" his stuff -- East as well as West! Portrays himself (classically) as the "stumbling student" (aren't "we" All), but does an outstanding summerization from all Non-Dual teachings!

This book is another gem from Wei Wu Wei. It is a fine collection of Zen Advaita and Tantra. It is a must have for anyone interested in the nature of THAT beyond the words or concepts.

Cut to the quick! Read this and you won't need to read further. Doesn't matter whether or not you think of yourself as a student of Zen. Wei Wu Wei goes to the heart and throws it in your face so clearly that the only way you won't "get it" is if you resist. If that is the case then stop reading all together. Save your money and buy insurance. A brilliant classic!

Wei Wu Wei has a few books out and they revolve around the enigmatic search for enlightenment. He plays the game well: if you say your're enightened, then we know you're not. Therfore, Wei Wu Wei never says that he is enlightend. Nevertheless, he writes about the possibility of falling into enlightenment the way one writes about falling in love. Everyone knows it's possible, but no one is prcise on how to get there. It appears that there's no instant formula. Wei Wu Wei is a Westerner who has embraced Zen, Tao, and other Asian traditions and has shapped it for a Western audiance. He uses shock dialog, and the koan type of no-speech, to help the sincere seeker loosen-up the ego's hold on the seat of identity. As to why Lazarus laughed? Imagine that you have broken free from the hypnotic hold of the ordinary consciousness. Now you're all ready for a new kind of existance, but the world is just the way it was before you had your moment. All woken up and no where to go. The jokes on you. The saving grace is that it really dosen't matter. Check out Wei Wu Wei's, Open Secret - it's better than Lazarus's last laugh.
