"...a 'must-have' volume for specialists in the field of obesity....The Handbook of Obesity Treatment successfully examines a broad expanse of research, summarizing it in a clear and easy-to-read volume. This text is highly recommended, as an essential resource for students, clinicians, and researchers who wish for a comprehensive review of information about obesity."--
Obesity and Eating Disorders Newsletter"For physicians and other health care professionals grappling with this 21st century challenge,
Handbook of Obesity Treatment provides a valuable resource. The editors have produced a work that can serve both as a reference for the researcher and scientifically curious practitioner and as a ready source of practical information for the clinician striving to help an obese patient. Despite its title the book's scope is by no means limited to treatment, as it provides a wealth of information of obesity per se. The 27 chapters cover the extent, causes, and consequences of obesity, the effects of weight loss, assessment of the obese patient, treatment of obesity, childhood obesity, and prevention. Each chapter is authored by one or more experts, usually including the most respected leader in that area. In nearly every case the authors have produced excellent summary reviews of the relevant research. The reader not familiar with the obesity field may be surprised at the amount and variety of excellent research that has been conducted....The chapters are comprehensive in coverage of their topics yet manageable in size. Each can stand on its own which facilitates productive chapter surfing....In summary, the
Handbook of Obesity Treatment is a very valuable resource for the clinician or researcher who desires a thorough, readable, and relevant source of information about obesity and its management."--
JAMA"It would be difficult to conceive of a better, more comprehensive text on the treatment of obesity than this one. Drs. Wadden and Stunkard have done an excellent job in providing a thorough, balanced, comprehensible overview of the field....Most of the book focuses on specific treatment issues, and here, the coverage is again both deep and broad, covering the expected topics, such as behavioral weight control and drug treatment, but also including extensive information about treatment issues frequently neglected, such as the use of popular diets and surgical treatment....this text is highly recommended. I know of no equivalent to it currently in the literature. While many psychiatrists may view the treatment of obesity as somewhat tangential to their practice needs, given the increasing prevalence of this problem in psychiatric patients, it cannot be overlooked, and a text such as this one can provide valuable information as to which patients should be referred, how to refer them, and to whom they should be referred."--
Journal of Clinical Psychiatry"...an excellent book for the medical profession treating obese individuals. Furthermore, it is also a wonderful resource for the consumer looking for more in-depth, yet understandable information on obesity. Because the book is formatted into main sections, it allows the reader to easily browse its contents. Another nice feature of the text is the list of extensive resources listed after each chapter. Notable professionals in the various fields of obesity treatment wrote the text. This allows for a broad prospective, from surgeons to behavioral experts. It is recommended for any public, academic, or special library."--
E-Streams"This excellent and comprehensive book provides a clear and well-written guide to the management of obesity....The array of distinguished and expert authors, who have the talent of conveying their knowledge in a digestible state, make for an enjoyable read. This book is ideal for dipping into or for systematic consumption, and I would recommend it to any individual engaged in the care of obese patients."--
European Eating Disorders Review"I found much of value in this primer on obesity. For those who are interested in a comprehensive review of current thinking on this topic, this compendium of 624 pages is well written and well organized....This book covers a substantial breadth of information and is recommended reading for clinicians who wish to explore our newest public health problem."--
The Permanente Journal"This book is the best current state of the art review of obesity treatment. Tom Wadden and Mickey Stunkard have assembled an excellent set of authors to summarize the field....this book is well-written, doesn't seem like the usual rehashing, focuses on developing areas, and considers many viewpoints. It could serve as an introduction for someone new to the obesity field, and update for those too busy to stay up with all the journal articles, or a statement to someone from a related profession of how far the treatment of obesity has come. I recommend it highly.--
