Howie Gordon has penned an entertaining and insightful autobiography that combines pathos and humor to shed light on and beyond the early adult industry. This is a real human story, one of those books where you keep saying just one more chapter before I go to bed and an hour later you're still reading and smiling.
You don't need to be a fan of the adult industry to like this book - you just need to enjoy creative, well-told stories of a very interesting life.

It's not often that I'm caught up in a book for more than 600 pages, but Howie Gordon has written a story that captured my interest and has so many wonderful parts & observations of the adult business. And it was great that the scenes about being in movies are interlaced with the personal: what's going on at home and elsewhere.
It's a lot of fun to read, with warmth, honesty, humor, and is refreshingly unpretentious. It's an authentic record of the times that so deserves to be heard.
I know I'm a bit jaded from my O'Farrell years but 2 of his scenes are brilliantly hilarious and both are close to the end of the book:
1) His visit to the S/M Dungeon--Congratulations, I haven't read anything that ironic and funny in maybe ever!!
2) "Ten Little Maidens", the Banquet Scene--Wow!!
I wish him the best of luck with promoting this and keeping it selling forever!

I suspect that every healthy young straight male who ever watched his proper share of pornographic movies has suffered pangs of envy, and entertained fantasies of changing places with the lucky guy having sex on-screen. Imagine having sex with an exciting variety of beautiful women---and getting paid for it. That is most surely a situation devoutly to be wished. On the screen the sex seems much hotter than most of us regularly encounter in the so-called "real world" off-screen to which fate has consigned us. The real people who provide those viscerally inspiring electric shadows are themselves also consigned to the "real world"----even when making those movies. This was especially apparent back in the 1970s-80s "Golden Age of Porn," when many of the movies tried to have plots, and when porn stars tended to look like real people, and when acting was still a useful career skill. Maybe it's just my crabby old man's myopia, but computer age porn stars don't have opportunity to show personality. Things were different in the good old days. Only a person without imagination could watch pornography from that "Golden Age" and not wonder about the off-screen lives of the performers.
HINDSIGHT, the memoirs of Howie Gordon (aka "Richard Pacheco," aka "Dewy Alexander") satisfies at least some of that curiosity. Having sex on camera with such "Golden Age" stars as Annette Haven, Georgina Spelvin, Veronica Hart, Marilyn Chambers, Jessie St. James, Loni Sanders, Seka, and Serena could apparently be as wonderful as possibly imagined. But having sex on a busy movie set, with all the mood breaking delays, interruptions, distractions, hot lights, and equipment failures could also be a bullet sweating, ego shredding ordeal of performance anxiety.Read more ›

A very funny, heartfelt memoir about Mr. Gordon's life as a porn star in the 70s and early eighties. The thing that really makes it wonderful is the very graceful writing and also how infused it is with a hippie 60s vibe: if you came of age during the 60s and know Lenny Bruce and the 2,000 Year-Old-Man, and also the sensibility surrounding the Bay Area at that time, you'll really appreciate his voice. Plus it's really sexy and there are great photos and insights into the sex industry, sex in general, and what it's like to be a horny guy trying to maintain a happy marriage. It was a real pleasure to read and superior to a lot of movie star memoirs which can be a plod to read.

Maybe there never was a "golden age of porn," after all it is born, but the product of those days is nth times better than what is being made today. The porn of today consists of oral, about four positions and the "money shot." You can make one 90 minute loop, put one of about 1000 different titles on it and no one would know the difference. And as to the "money shot", really? Does anyone find that erotic who is above the age of thirteen?
This book makes an attempt to glamorize an industry that many feel cannot be so made, and it succeeds to some extent, but again it is porn, and there is a market obviously, but what can be said about this industry that matters?
By far, the most interesting part of the book is the whole discussion of monogamy that is the core of the book. Interesting tack, but a issue that was resolved the first time the author appears on set.
