Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Lethal Rejection features an array of fiction on crime and punishment written by prisoners, academics and students of criminology. The authors use short stories, plays, and poetry to provide authentic and vivid depictions of the netherworld that is our penal system. In the words of noted criminologist and lawyer, Joycelyn Pollock, 'this book is fiction; but it is also a book about prison that can offer a type of truth that numbers can't. Enjoy your reading if you can.'

About the Author

Robert Johnson is a Professor of Justice, Law and Society at American University and Editor of BleakHouse Publishing. Johnson is a widely published author of fiction and non-fiction. He is the author of two collections of original poems on justice issues, Poetic Justice: Reflections on the Big House, the Death House, and the American Way of Justice, winner of the L.I.F.E. award from WilloTrees Press; and Burnt Offerings: Poems on Crime and Punishment. Johnson is the author of Justice Follies: Parody from Planet Prison, a collection of satirical stories on prisons and prison life; and Sunset Sonata: Stories and Poems from the River's Edge, a collage of stories and poems about daily life, including life in the shadow of terrorism. His short stories and poems have appeared in Admit2, The American Review, Black Bear Review, The National Catholic Reporter, Carnelian, CMC (Crime Media Culture), Dan River Anthology, JMWW, Lifelines, Mannequin Envy, Pleasant Living Magazine, Tacenda Literary Magazine, and Wild Violet. Johnson's best-known work of social science, Death Work: A Study of the Modern Execution Process, won the Outstanding Book Award of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

Sonia Tabriz is an award-winning author and honors student at American University majoring in Law & Society and Psychology. She is an active member of the University Honors Program, and also volunteers as an American University Ambassador to provide guidance and support to her fellow students. Tabriz was twice awarded the American University Outstanding Honors Student Award for her academic achievements. Upon visiting the Maryland Correctional Adjustment Center, a high security prison, she was inspired to explore the intricacies of prison life and expose this underground world to a wider audience through her writing. Since then, Tabriz has been published in and now serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Tacenda Literary Magazine; she also serves as Managing Editor of BleakHouse Publishing. Most recently, her writing has appeared in Bleak House Review, which featured 'The Prison Librarian,' a short story with Victor Hassine, which received a Tacenda Literary Award for Best Collaboration; and her poem, 'empty spaces,' which received a Tacenda Literary Award for Best Poem. Tabriz looks forward to attending law school upon graduation and aspires to continue writing on issues of criminal justice and deprivation of liberty.
