I feel disgruntled about having bought this book, in particularly the blurb above claims "Explores how to combine neurofeedback with breathwork, mindfulness, meditation, and attention-control exercises such as Open Focus"

Actually - not.

There's one chapter at the end on Consciousness but Open focus is only mentioned on one page and nothing you can glean from it on how do it yourself.

The back of the book jacket says "He shows how to recognize our own dominant wave range and thus learn to exercise control over our mental states". Again there is nothing in the book about this.

What it is actually a collection of chapters written by different people, so it is not very coherent, showing how a specialist with the equipment could help treat autism, ADHD, brain injury, stroke, OCD also the adopted child. There is no specific chapter on PTSD.

This may be of use to you, but was not what I was really looking for.

This was OK for a general overview but after a few chapters it just kept repeating itself for each new diagnoses.

Pros: Highly recommend to those with advanced education in neuroscience and brain disorders
As a neuroscientist, I could keep up with the terminology and underlying disorders

Cons: Not ideal for families or those without additional education seeking treatments or a better understanding of the uses of neurofeedback.

I expected more a lot more from this book but was sadly disappointed when I got it and went through it. I find it as a little fluff.

Interesting book. It is quite clinical in some places, very colloquial and off-hand in others. It does not paint a very flattering picture of some physicians and their ability to accurately diagnose brain disorders.Certainly worth reading if you want to inform yourself about these alternative therapies.

Any book that purports to be an "overview" of neurofeedback but leaves out Val Brown's NeurOptimal, or any mention of zengar and the non-linear dynamical systems approach to the brain, and instead stays in the last century with the linear, mechanistic views (long understood to be outdated when looking at any organic system) has missed the mark. I have used several of the systems described, and in general have a great deal of respect for most of the people discussed and their (at the time) innovative approaches to the brain, but it's a little pathetic that they don't even discuss the views that Dr Brown brought to the field, and which they are all slowly adding into their respective systems, even if they are a few decades late.

Riveting Must-Read Book on Neurotherapy

Dr. Larsen's latest book is a riveting journey through the dramatic, rapidly evolving world of neurofeedback. It offers great hope for consumers and exciting new treatments for mental health clinicians to offer their patients. Dr. Larsen's own outstanding skills and experience with these revolutionary technologies shine through his interviews with pioneers in the field and through his case discussions.
Transmitting this information to the next generation of health professionals is crucial to helping more people attain better mental health while reducing the burden of medication side effects. Academics will appreciate where Dr. Larsen leads the reader by his novel approach to understanding consciousness.
A must-read for those wanting to enhance their clients' responses to treatment, either by incorporating innovative techniques into their own practice, or by referring patients to neurotherapists.

I enjoyed reading Stephen's first book on neurofeedback, "The Healing Power of Neurofeedback", however this book seemed more disjointed and not as coherent. Despite that, as one reads the case studies presented throughout this book one cannot help but be gripped by the power of neurofeedback to change lives for the better and want to get the word out to more people that they do have other options, other than what is usually offered.

Also some of the innovations happening within neurofeedback that are presented toward the end of the book are exciting and I look forward to exploring these further, perhaps in a future book by Stephen.
