Gerri Hill's latest book, "The Rainbow Cedar," is reminiscent of her earlier novels, and that is a good thing.

I wasn't overly thrilled with her last two books--"The Cottage" and the Hunter sequel, "In the Name of the Father"--but this book has much going for it.

Jay meets Drew literally by accident in Austin, Texas. They are attracted to one another, but Jay's in the midst of an eight-year relationship, and Drew won't be the one to break up that relationship.

Jay's partner Katharine is a high-powered attorney, bucking to make partner and then strike out on her own. As a result of Katherine's ambition and workaholic ways, their relationship is on the rocks. And when a former lover of Katherine's comes in the picture, Jay can either stay and fight for what she has, or follow her heart.

My only dislike? Ah, the habit of authors ending their books too soon! That knocked one star off my rating.

A light read, a fun read, with enough sexual tension to keep you flipping to the next chapter.

Welcome back, Gerri! You've been missed.

The characters in "The Rainbow Cedar" are similar to those found in "Gulf Breeze". They banter, they tease, they titilate. They make you laugh out loud at times and then breathe a deep "ahhhh".

There is no lesfic writer out there, in my opinion, who can transition from adventure/mystery/cop story to romance as well as Hill and lucky for me I enjoy all types of lesfic and Gerri Hill has never disappointed me with any of her books.

When I read "The Rainbow Cedar" I was smiling from the moment Jay "bumps" into Drew early in the story through to the last page. And I admit I laughed out loud more than a few times along the way. And when I got to "the end" I felt like I had just hung out with a couple of really cool friends and had an exceptionally good time!

And if that isn't enough, Hill does an excellent job of exploring the conflict and human emotion Jay feels as she faces the ending of one part of her life and the possibility of a whole new chapter. I'd say more but I don't want to spoil the story for you.

"The Rainbow Cedar" is truly worth reading and if you loved Pat and Carly in "Gulf Breeze", you're sure to love this one too. So give it a read. You'll be glad you did.

This book wasn't terrible. However, like many of Gerri Hill's more recent books, The Rainbow Cedar has recycled characters and story lines from previous books. A lot of Hill's books have become formulaic and unimaginative and feature characters that are a little annoying in their insistence on prolonging horrible relationships and indulging the abhorrent behavior of others. It goes on so long that I stop rooting for the characters and find myself getting angry with them. While entertaining, The Rainbow Cedar is a quick, simple read that lacks depth. Looking for the complex, dreamy characters present in Hill's first few novels, I was disappointed. For her next endeavor, I sincerely hope that Hill finds her inspiration and delivers the truly spectacular novel of which she is clearly capable.

so sorry, this one was a bit boring. basically the entire book dwelled on Jay deciding to break up with her 8 yr disfunctional relationship. the reader knows the relationship is over but Jay just drags it out even though Jay is very interested in Drew. Also gerri spent a lot of time telling us about all the stuff you can do in Hawaii. i felt like Gerri wrote this book to write off a trip to Hawaii.
Not gerri's usual quality

I seriously don't know what happened at the "END" of the book. I mean the "villan" walks away with her life intact, NO consequences whatsoever! and the Heroine's life was left shattered. The Main Character started off Weak and ended up Weak. Never Speak or stand off for herself always depending on others. The ending was not Sad nor was Happy, it was just 'Meh'. All except Beautiful and Powerful Katherine, she had her happy ending.

F/F cheating little weasels romance

I kinda hated this one. The weakest points being that these two leads completely blended in my mind and they allow women to treat them like crap... for way too long. That, and all the cheating... just isn't the context for sexy or romantic to me. It just made the story kind of terrible. Simplistic plot and characters all around; no depth whatsoever.

Doormat Jay is in an 8-year relationship with wealthy and beautiful Katherine, a controlling and ambitious snob who spends all her time trying to make partner at her law firm. Jay feels neglected and unloved and doesn't really find herself attracted to Katherine anymore. Meanwhile, Katherine doesn't bother to notice. Her mind is focused on her career and other women. And yet they stay together, complacently, treating each other like crap.

So when dormat Drew comes along and sparks fly, Jay conveniently begins to realize her long term relationship is on the rocks. More likely, she doesn't want to be alone, so when she sees an opportunity to leech on to a new woman then she's ready for a change. That's how relationship people who can't be alone fly. It's just a bit ugly to watch. They are clearly attracted and flirt but do nothing about it for a long time and then Drew hooks up with another. But the seed is there and it's a lot like cheating- it's planning. Spoilers ahead...

I don't take issue with this initial part of the story much. It's really just how long they flirt around this attraction and how long they put up with their jerky partners... which became downright ridiculous when Jay and Katherine and Drew and her date take a vacation to Hawaii together... and basically swap partners the WHOLE TIME and cheat.
