I would recommend skipping the first forty pages of the book (modern prefaces and introductions) and begin with what Octavia Rogers Albert wrote. Her style is conversational. You feel like you are there, listening while she interviews each eyewitness. She is careful in her questions to make sure that all the accounts are truthful. Her Christian faith and her godly compassion are apparent throughout. I would recommend this book for pre-teens and older.

This book takes you back to a time when freedom was not an option for everyone. The story details pulls you into the time period and reflects on the reality of Southern Louisiana and it's brutal past.

Narrated by Octavia Albert, this book documents the true stories of several former slaves, their personal views, their struggles, and their triumphs. The stories are heartfelt and the convictions of the author to pass on the history of her people are evident in her dedicated writing.
