About the Author
Stephen Farrell studies and works at Trinity College Dublin, where he is a research fellow in the department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering and a member of the Distributed Systems Group of the Department of Computer Science. Involved for over a decade with a number of Internet standards activities, he is currently co-chair of the IRTF Delay Tolerant Networking Research Group and is also involved in anti-spam work as co-chair of the IETF Domain Keys Identified Mail Working Group. He earned a joint honors degree in mathematics and computer science at University College in Dublin. Vinny Cahill is a professor of computer science at Trinity College Dublin where he leads the Distributed Systems Group in the Department of Computer Science. His current work addresses middleware support for dependable sentient computing for applications ranging from intelligent vehicles to independent living for the elderly or those suffering from neurodegenerative disease. He was a founding Editorial Board member of IEEE Pervasive Computing and is a current member of the Editorial Board of IEEE Distributed Systems Online.

TCP/IP has become so prevalent a transmission protocol, that the assumption that this is all that is needed becomes almost accepted as fact. Yet, there are problems. To mention just one,TCP has a built in time out factor of two minutes so that if no data is sent in two minutes the circuit is shut down. If you are trying to communicate with a space craft that's more than two minutes away communications will never be estblished.

As a result of this and several other problems, JPL began to devise a new communications protocol to specially handled these kinds of problem areas. The result is the InterPlanetory Networn, or IPN.

With more experience in using IPN, several other applications have emerged, i.e. military battlefield sensors, arctic lake pollution monitoring where the sensor is visited once a year, and many others.

This book describes the structure and design of delay and disruption tolerant networks to a depth that the organization needing such capabilities could build one.
