Format: Paperback
The beginning of Auschwitz, its end, and in between, stories of individuals--hapless prisoners as well as despicable commandants. The information contained here is put forth in clear and excruciating detail, including photographs, in color and black and white, and large, well-defined sidebars which evidence excerpts from diaries (eg.): "In books you read: [Auschwitz] was like this, and this. The authors always write that so and so many people were murdered and ... maltreated. That is correct, that is all true, but you don't read about the feelings, the constant fear. There are things that people cannot begin to comprehend." In this well-researched and concise and passionate book, readers will read about the feelings, and gulp down some of their own. The text is large, well-spaced and clear; the primary colors which bind the book are black and a deep, somber red. Readers will learn much from this book.

My son took this book home from the library and I read about 80% of it before he returned it. The subject matter can be very difficult to handle because of the horrible nature of it all. This book did a very good job of bringing these events to life through first person accounts, yet I didn't walk away from the book depressed. My son is in high school and was able to read through the book without tuning out which is a lot to say for a teenager who loves video games. It is definitely geared to students from middle to high school, but is a good read for an adult who wants to read more on the subject without making a commitment to some 400 page book that is as dry as the paper it is printed on.
