I have always considered myself a fairly "aware" individual. Growing up in New York City, I was taught at an early age to be attentive to my surroundings, on alert to potential threats, and avoid dangerous situations. However, this book has opened my eyes that real awareness is an acquired skill that requires instruction, training, and practice. This book taught me how to be aware and avoid threats through the total awareness system, and also goes into detail on what to do if you do find yourself in an unfortunate situation. The Travel Preparation and Planning chapter was particularly helpful both in planning our trip and covering the "what if" situations that we all hope to never experience. I highly recommend this book whether you are a world traveler, a local business traveler, or if you are taking your family on vacation.

If you're consistently travelling abroad, this book is a valuable tool. The system the author describes is founded on sound personal security principals. I'm a savvy traveler but I'd never utilized, or even heard of the "THREAT" acronym prior to this book. The author has thoroughly researched and compiled an extensive guide, in which he lists resources for areas that the inquisitive reader may further research. (I'd heard of "OODA" loops, but as the author warned, Boyd takes them to microscopic level).

My personal favorite part of the book is the routinely updated website which supports it. The website offers training in the Total Awareness System and travel updates designed to update any information in the book itself that becomes out of date. Access to the website's information is subscription-based, though upon emailing the site I was granted a 30-day trial period.

The only real criticism I have of the book is the Al Queda manual and Cultural Awareness Guide. Emerson does point out cultural differences in areas such as Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, but includes country specific information in the appendices. I myself would have preferred web links pointing to most current information; I did like the quizzes for each country however. Hopefully this will be incorporated into his website.

Bottom line; if you're serious about personal safety while traveling, Escape the Wolf is an easy to follow information and training system consolidated into one book.

While this book is billed as a "Personal Security Handbook for the Traveling Professional" the vast majority of the content is a junior high level overview of basic facts and customs associated with different travel destinations. This information is readily available (for free) from a myriad of other sources. The real reason I purchased the book was the promise of unique and thoughtful insights into enhancing one's security while traveling. Instead, the 35% of the book devoted to this subject matter provides only the most basic and obvious suggestions, some of which are so blindingly apparent to cause me to question the author's sincerity. One particularly egregious example regarding airline security, "Try to book a non-stop flight, as these have fewer takeoffs and landings" (p. 171). By definition, a non-stop flight has one takeoff and one landing. Another example regarding safety during a storm, "Language permitting, listen to the radio or TV for information" (p. 140). If these observations were apparent to you as well, there is little in this book that will enhance your awareness, understanding, or security while traveling.

I am a frequent business traveler. I spend about 2-3 weeks a month on the road (think George Clooney in Up in the Air). This book has opened my eyes to a whole other side of traveling safely.

The THREAT concept is super simple to remember and covers the whole spectrum of traveling.

If you travel, you are missing a piece of travel gear if you don't own this book.

This is an up to date manual for the traveling businessman who cares about their personal security. It is full of good to know, handy information.

The back of the book has a country guide for the various places you may be visiting outside the USA. There are things about each country like how to dress for business occasions and how to dress just to blend in. I recommend it even if you are not traveling out of the country. For example, there was a very interesting tidbit about how to secure your laptop computer in case it is stolen or someone tries to hack it to steal business information. I found it interesting and recommend it highly.

As usual, Amazon had a great price, packaged it well and got it here quickly.

I was expecting a lot more, but you get a lot of tech. talk and acronms but little substance. Most of what is covered I already knew from prior military travel (12 yrs), If you live in fantasy land and never worry about being on guard overseas then this book would be OK. I think most busness men and women know Americans are tragets where ever they go. Always keep your eyes open and never let anyone get too close to you. Remember trust no one.

I heard about Escape the Wolf from a friend of my husband, who is in the FBI. My husbands friend highly recommended the book for anyone that travels. My son is a contractor in Iraq and he admittedly said it has opened his eyes and mind up to all the potential threats. He passed it around to all his friends and they all thought it was a great read - its a real world guide to becoming more "sheepdog vice sheep" like - and being a mom - thats exactly what I want for my son and his friends.
