As beekeepers for 45 years we don't buy bee books often as they rarely offer anything new but Keeping Bees is an exception. The text and excellent photographs offer the promise that you can manage a colony of bees even if you don't have a mentor watching over your shoulder. Often my husband is so speedy at opening a hive that I don't really understand what he is doing so I really liked the concise step-by-step photo sequences. The bee journals can be too technical but this book strikes the right balance of information for anyone aspiring to be a beekeeper.

I have been waiting for this book to be published ever since I purchased the first two books in Ashley English's "Homemade Living" series. I have been researching bee keeping for about a year now, mostly because I plant a garden every year and would like to give it a boost, but also because I am fascinated by honeybees and would like to have my own honey source. I love this book because it is packed with great information but is not overwhelming. English tackles the most important lessons of beekeeping and stays on task. After reading this, I definitely think I can manage a couple of hives, and I am really excited to get started. Bottom line: if you're thinking about keeping bees, read this book first.

I love this book, because it is filled with wonderful information about the life of bees and how to harvest your own honey in your own backyard. The book is filled with great images and easy to follow tutorials how to set up hives and how to maintain them. I am not a beekeeper, but I grow my own fruits and vegetables in order to have access to truly organic food and I am considering keeping my own beehive after reading this book.

Being a beekeeper for a few years you can imagine I have read my share of books on this subject. This one was refreshing to read. Ashley really laid out great information in an organized way with fun visuals. Easy read and a perfect book for anyone thinking of getting into managing honeybees.
Great job Ashley!

This is a beautifully written and well tought out book. Its chock full of correct and detailed information for the hopeful beekeeper and has grains of wisdom for one who has already begun their journey as a keeper of the bees. As a commercial beekeeper and beekeeping supplier I would recommend this book to anyone with interest in beekeeping, starting out, or in their early years with the bees. If you don't know already when you get 10 beekeepers together you will get at least a dozen opinions on any subject. Ashley English has done fine work with these dozen. Check it out!

I received my book a couple of weeks ago. Amazon is on point as usual. This is a great book. I have been waiting to get it since I checked out Keeping Chickens from the library so many times I decided to get my own copy. I am planning to start bee keeping mostly just for fun but also for the chance to help bees out and get some honey in return. The book is choc-full of information and pictures, but I really love the humor too. I will read through it time and again, in preparation for starting a hive. Thank you.

Maybe a professional might find this book juvenile but for a beginner, I love love love this book! I feel it's informative without going over my head or without dumbing it down. It also has a lot of instructions and images to aid comprehension. This book covers everything from setting up a hive to getting bees in the mail to harvesting the honey. She also included bios from established beekeepers (including herself!). I follow the writer's blog (design sponge) and I love her work. As a side note, Amazon got the book to be when I needed it, and in great shape. The book is also really well-priced for how informative it is. I would highly recommend this book for someone who is toying with the idea of keeping bees. Thanks also for the recipes!

Keeping Bees is part of the Homemade Living Series of books that includes reference books geared toward people everywhere who are interested in seasonal, local food with an interest in knowing how and where it's produced, becoming engaged in their communities, exploring self-sustainability, and enjoying fresh flavors. Other books in the series include Keeping Chickens, Home Dairy, and Canning and Preserving.

Keeping Bees begins with an introduction to the do-it-yourself food movement along with how keeping your own bees can be a great step toward championing home-grown food. Chapter one is an extremely detailed introduction to honey bees that looks at the history of honey bees from prehistoric cave paintings up through the current times. Then learn all about honeybee anatomy, with descriptions as well as pictures to follow along. The book also includes pictures and descriptions of each of the three types of honey bees in the hive hierarchy.

I had no idea some of the information I read in this chapter! I definitely do NOT want to be a male honey bee! You will also learn all about the different duties of the worker bees and the life stages of honeybees.

Also included in the book is everything you need to know from considering whether or not bees are for you to the housing requirements, feeding bees, essential bee-keeping supplies, where to find the bees, a look inside a beehive, a look at bees through the seasons with handy checklists on health and wellness, and a chapter on the honey itself.

The last chapter in this book is definitely my very favorite and it includes honey recipes! You can easily make these honey recipes from your own honey or from honey purchased from the store or local supplier.
