Reading the brief reviews of the people surveyed in this book gave me a further insight into those with whom I already had some modest knowledge, and it encouraged me to read about the lives of a few of the others about whom I had no knowledge at all. Some of the reviews were a bit too short to develop much interest in the individual being discussed. A little more depth in the quality of the writing itself would have enriched its reading enjoyment.

While any book like this is subjective, this gives a lot of interesting information. The people don't seem to be listed in order and for that reason I think book, The 100 by Michael H. Hart is better.

This brief coffee table book contains a page or two--at most--of more than 100 familiar historical and legendary figures. It should be noted that these legendary figures are not spoken of as legendary, but I suppose that is not so much an oversight as a conscious decision on the part of the editors.

These groups of famous names are broken down into four categories: Beacons of the Spirit, Explorers and Visionaries, Leaders of the People, and Architects of Culture.

I find it interesting that the first figure named in the Beacons of the Spirit category is Abraham rather than Jesus or Mohammad. On one hand this choice seems odd, given that Abraham is more clearly a legendary figure than Jesus or Mohammad. One the other hand, most of what is known of Jesus and Mohammad is more legendary than historical. So if you are going to start a book with legendary figures, it makes sense to begin with the figure who is the legendary progenitor of the two major religions. It is also reasonable to give the biography of Buddha before that of Jesus and Mohammad, since he preceded them in history. Moses, another legendary figure that I would have thought would have been included in Beacons of the Spirit, instead heads up the Leaders of the People category.
The remaining legendary figure, the Greek poet Homer is the first man under Architects of Culture. Actually the only category led by somebody who is not legendary is Explorers and Visionaries, in which Hippocrates, Euclid, and Archimedes tie for first place.

I should also observe that this book has been kept up to date by adding a few ancillary figures who have become better known as of late, including Osama bin Laden--whose recent demise is included in his biographical sketch.Read more ›
