By Fred V. Lowe Jr. on February 20, 2016
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This collection of essays, reminiscences, and poetry was compiled in response to the terrorist attack in the bookseller's quarter of Baghdad in 2007. It is -- or should be - a wake-up call to those of us who write and publish (as well as to all of us who read) about the importance of books and the marvels they contain. We are reminded many times in these pages that Iraqi literature reaches back some 5 or 6 millenia, that there is a rich history of words that continues into the present. It was not defeated by the bombing, but instead inspired this rich collection. (Do I write "rich" too often? There is no better word!)

The central metaphor is that Al Mutanabbi Street begins again with each one of us, each time we pick up a pen or sit at a keyboard to write, each time we open a book.

A beautiful book and response to a tragic and horrific incident. This is indeed a testament to the human spirit.
