Format: Hardcover
Must read! An excellent and highly informative overview of the current state of implicit social cognition, highlighting both the current understanding as the challenges for implicit social cognition. The chapters are written by experts in the field that do not simply herald the amazing insights implicit social cognition has provided, but critically review past empirical findings, and dare to question previous conclusions where necessary. There might be a bit too many chapters, with especially the contributions at the end of the book being written for a more limited audience, but it's worth buying the book for only the first 10 chapters. The theoretical discussions on automaticity, the comparisons between implicit tasks as well as the advice on procedures should be interesting for every PhD student psychology. Gawronski and Payne did a good job at creating a coherent overview and a balence between theoretical and practical issues in implicit social cognition.

Gawronkski and Payne have put together an incredibly thorough book that covers a wide range of research related to implicit social cognition. Anyone new to implicit measures--like the IAT or Priming--should seriously consider this book, and there is enough detail in the chapters that experienced researchers of implicit social cognition will likely learn a lot too. The initial chapter on the history of implicit social cognition research is a very interesting read, and the chapters dedicated to specific topics--like romantic relationship research-- are very helpful in surveying what has already been accomplished with these measures. I own both Implicit Measures of Attitudes, and Attitudes: Insights from the New Implicit measures; both are very good reads. However, I think the Handbook of Implicit Social Cognition offers a more comprehensive resource, and I believe it will quickly become the initial "go-to" reference for anyone wanting to learn more about implicit processes, and how to apply implicit measures in your own research.
