I got my Dynamite 10th Anniversary Humble Bundle yesterday, and with it came what is now my favorite mini-series about zombies ever: Fred Van Lente's The Mocking Dead.

You would think, based on the title and the art and the CDDC ad, that this comic would be nothing but a spoof of Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead, and spoofs are stupid and not worth your time (as we are reminded every time Marlon Wayans makes another movie). You would be wrong. It is so much more than that!

The Mocking Dead is the story of Aaron Bunch, a current uber-fanboy and former analyst for the DIA's Sub-division of Entertainment Emulation Threat Assessment (Code-named "TINSELTOWN"). As someone with experience in both of those fields, I must say, Van Lente got everything right. He even includes a convincing SECRET/NOFORN document explaining Tinseltown's establishment.

When we first meet Aaron Bunch, he's, uh... doing... stuff... while parodying the Green Lantern mantra (we'll skip over that part).... but is interrupted by a DIA task force. Bunch assumes they're there because of his illegal torrent-hosting site, pop-pirate.biz.

Which is, yeah... that's awesome. Now Van Lente really had me: a former analyst fanboy who has two legitimate reasons for pirating scanlations? Yeah, I'm in.

The story is told in a somewhat linear style, where Bunch goes to the DIA and suggests they use the population of Pittsburg as bait for the National Guard to come in with flamethrowers to take out the zombies.
