My kids and I are hooked on this - we are learning Greek and we seem to
treat this as more of a game than a Lesson as it is so Fun.
There is no English (Written or Spoken)in this teaching tool
all of the exercises are very intuitive (In fact, anyone speaking any language
could use this or any Rosetta program to learn a language). You have to glean
what Rosetta wants you to do via visual context clues - just like when you were a
baby/toddler and learning your Mother Tongue. This immersion-style method
is a rewarding activity because (unlike a video game) you gain a genuine feel
of accomplishing something useful when you achieve a new "Level" (told you it
was like a game!). We are all now applying our new skills in daily interactions
and its a hoot:) Better still, you can review to your hearts content and move
forward when you feel prepared. This is structured in a way that you work on Reading,
Writing (typing), Grammar, and Spelling and pronunciation with each "Level"
so you get a broad comprehensive feel for the language. My husbands
first Language is Greek and finally I found a learning system who's
pronunciation he does not complain about. There is even a way to
adjust the sensitivity of the software for pronunciation so it will
go easy on you at the start until you get more confident with the
rolled "R's" and soft "G's" You wear a mike when you "Play"
and Rosetta "Listens" to your verbal responses. The whole program is
very complete and very cleverly executed. I guess the only draw back
would be that I don't have more time to "Play" ! Worth the $$$!

This is the third time I've tried to do language training with Rosetta Stone over the last 7 or 8 years. Some time in 2003, I bought a level-1 Asian languages course (Korean, Japanese, Chinese) and was very unimpressed. After several weeks of focusing on Korean, I had learned how to recognize phrases like "the horse is white" and "the boy has a red ball" and similar things equally useful (or not mostly). I actually taught myself the Korean alphabet prior to starting with the Rosetta stone software, so it wasn't that difficult to start recognizing the words (the Korean alphabet is phonetic like the Roman alphabet and MUCH easier to learn than kanji characters used in Japanese or Chinese) but I wasn't building any vocabulary I could use in the local Korean restaurant, so to say.

And given the limited utility of what I was learning, I burned out on it pretty quickly.

Fast forward about 5 years and a friend of mine whose wife is Dutch told me he had used Rosetta Stone for Dutch. He said he had had decent success, but clarified the first month or so seemed fairly pointless (like my experience) and after sticking with it for several months or so, doing at least 30 minutes a day, it started to click and make sense...understanding the language AND the overall approach Rosetta Stone was using.

Based on his feedback, I decided to give Rosetta Stone for Greek a try, but I wasn't quite ready to buy it. I got a hold of an "unofficial" test copy of version 2, loaded it up, and gave it a shot. It was definitely better than the Korean I had tried years earlier, but again, there didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason why I was being taught the phrases or vocabulary I was learning. I admit I only tried it for about a week.

I am learning Greek, but I am very disappointed in this program. In some sections they throw words at you so fast and there is absolutely no way to pause these parts of the program. If you miss just a couple of words you will be lost on the next sections. Also, you can't redo individual sections, they make you start the whole program over again erasing all of your progress.
I didn't expect this to be the miracle program that they make it out to be, but they claimed I could "go at my own pace", but that is not true. Only in a few sections can you actually go at your own pace, so that you can sound out the words and try to put the words within the context of the picture. So overall, you can go at your pace, but in certain sections they make you work at their insanely fast pace.
Overall:
Cons: I would really like this program, if I could pause it when the phone rings, or someone knocks at the door. For this kind of money, I don't think a pause button is too much to ask for. I wouldn't even care about not being able to redo sections if I had at least that.
Pros: I am a big fan of the total immersion style programs without any English translations. It's annoying at first, but it really does teach you to "think in a different language".
I am still happy I bought it, but next year when I start learning German, if Rosetta Stone still has the same fast paced format with no pause button, I will just buy one of the cheaper immersion programs.
