This book is a wonderful learning tool for new photographers and a great refresher for people who already have a good understanding of light. Other books I've attempted to read on flash photography are daunting, technically complex and so boring that you can't wait to put them back on the shelf. The Nikon Speedlight handbook was different; I read it in two evenings. Stephanie has an easy to understand writing style that keeps you interested. Not only does she clearly explain the buttons and menus of the Nikon flash units, but she also teaches you how to use your speedlight and camera to create amazing images with very little gear. If you're a boudoir photographer like me who shoots in hotels, you know you can't always count on the room you rent to have beautiful natural window light. There will be times you are going to have to use your flash and this book will show you how. So if you want to know more about things like bouncing your flash, off camera lighting, the effect that aperture and shutter speed have on a photograph, portrait lighting patterns and so much more this book is for you!

In her Nikon Speedlight handbook, Stephanie does much more than cover basic flash techniques. Although she starts off slow (so this book is great for beginners), the book quickly moves into more creative and more advanced techniques. As a full time professional photographer for the last 7 years, I feel quite confident in my lighting techniques. After reading this book however, I feel the drive to go out and be more creative and use some of the alternate techniques that are demonstrated.

One major plus of the book? Each kind of lighting scenario is explained in photographs and text. For those of us who are visual learners, the inclusion of so many beautiful photographs is very helpful. For the more technical minded, the text is clear, concise, and easy to understand.

I normally don't write reviews, but I'm making an exception with this one.I got this book because I needed to learn about the Nikon Speedlights and CLS. I have to say this book is fantastic. She explains things in a very simple manner, easy to understand. Stephanie also managed to include so many examples in the book that you can clearly see what she means. I'm a very visual learner, so this is very important to me. I think that I will compile my own set of examples as I try to practice the different subjects, so that I get an idea of what I'm doing. I'm so glad I bought it and must say 'WELL DONE'.

Stephanie has done an excellent job of both writing about and illustrating the use of the Nikon Speedlight system in her new book. This is a must read for anyone just starting out with their first Nikon camera and speed light as well as for anyone wanting to venture into off camera lighting. Her book is easy to read and understand.

I just moved to the Nikon system recently and wanted to know how to navigate the menus of these little light makers. When you pick up a speedlite and power it on for the first time, you are greeted with different options. Not to mention different symbols and buttons, that allow you to be creative with these tools. The problem is these things can be intimidating, yes Nikon has a great owners manual, it is not laid out in a reader friendly format.

Yes most of this information is in the manual, but the flow of information, and the layout makes this a quick easy read. The very clear and concise writing style is easy to follow, not to mention the detailed images of the flash settings.

Be truthful--do you stay away from the use of speedlights because you actually prefer natural illumination in ALL conditions? Or is it because you think it either looks artificial or is too complicated?

If your answer is one of the last two, this is the book for you. Stephanie demystifies the use of speedlights, and in the process, shows you ways you can use them in many ways other than just on-camera. Your images don't HAVE to look artificially lit--with mastery of speedlights, it CAN mimic natural light. But you don't have to stop there--often the existing light is not the best for your subject. You can add emphasis, clarity, drama, and detail to what would otherwise be a ho-hum depiction of your subject. This book will show you how to use speedlights to take your images to the next level.

And if you ALREADY use speedlights? I'll just bet that you don't know all the information in this book. Besides giving you the scoop on how these speedlights work, there are many examples (with details) that should give a creative photographer ideas of their own--a great source of inspiration!

This is a really useful and interesting read. Starting with covering the basics of Understanding Light and Exposure, Stephanie sets you up for getting handy with a Nikon Speedlight or two.

Easy to read with lots of accompanying illustrations and guides, the book covers every aspect you need to know to make amazing images.

I loved the fact that illustrations easily showed the right way and wrong way of using your flash, how different techniques can give you different results and what a variety of modifiers used can do to your images.

Definitely a guide to return to time and time again.
