I really like Krentz/Quick, but this book was just not up to her caliber. I was a bit surprised at all the 4 and 5 star reviews, but different strokes, I suppose. The hero and heroine just weren't fleshed out; I never got a 'feel' for either of them. They seemed to go from politeness with each other to love, and, frankly, I just didn't see it. The author always has good plots, but this one was a bit weak - I saw the ending coming way earlier than I should have. I agree with another reviewer who says that writing all these books every year is taking a toll on the author. I liked the first book of this series, but this one was a letdown. I'd be happier with fewer books each year if the author could spend a little more time developing the characters and the plot. I still reread many of her earlier books...they have so much more meat to them than this one. If you like Amanda Quick, you'll still get this book, but I'll bet you are just as letdown and I am.

I believe that Ms. Krentz has spread herself a bit thin trying to keep up with three different personas of writers all of whom are herself. The use of the trilogy has given her the ability to streamline some of the writing by trailing the stories across all three timelines. Now she seems to be staying in the same time zone and using friends & family members to create the trilogies, but doing a different trio in each time zone seems to be a bit draining. There's nothing wrong with a formula as long as there's enough original material to keep the zing in the story.

I really enjoyed the "Crystal Gardens" which was the first book in this series. It had a refreshingly interesting twist to the paranormal side of the story. In this tale, we have a lot of conversation, all on the same topic - hero "I don't have a paranormal talent and I don't believe in the paranormal - heroine "I have a genuine paranormal talent and so do you". Yawn. There were too many clues to the "surprise" twist at the end - I saw it coming a mile away. I do have to say that I appreciate the fact the Ms. Krentz doesn't use embarrassing incidents as humor in her books. This type of thing makes me cringe! Unfortunately I couldn't find much humor in this book. It seemed flat compared to many of the titles that I have enjoyed by her in the past. I think my favorite is "Hidden Talents". There is a single instance of paranormal activity in the book, but there are also numerous scenes that are very funny, point out human foilables, and strike just the right note of zany.

Writing is a very difficult thing to do, and Ms. Krentz does it beautifully. Even though every book can't be a stellar performance, I still enjoy reading Ms. Krentz's efforts and I look forward to reading the last installment of this trilogy.

You can't go wrong reading any of the books by this writer. Her stories are interesting, the pacing smooth, and the characters well drawn. What I loved about the Amanda Quick books is that her characters are different than the usual Regency earls and viscounts. For the last few years, AQ books mostly involved the paranormal, which is fine. The problem here is I didn't really care about Joshua and Beatrice. At the end of the book, I know just a little about them. For example, Josh is supposed to be horribly scarred in the face, but other than mentioning it as a detail, we have no idea how he feels about it or how his lover feels about it. Since nothing was done with it, why make him scarred? There is enough detail about his leg to get the point across about him being damaged goods.

I think I may be getting a little tired of the paranormal angle or maybe it's the interconnectedness of the series (and not just the Amanda Quick, but ALL Jayne Ann Krentz's books.)

While I did like the main characters Beatrice and Joshua, the story didn't grab me. It was a fun "beach read" kind of book where you don't have to pay much attention to anything, but not overly absorbing.

I am glad that the author jettisoned the Arcane Society in specific even though this book can, conceivably, exist side by side with them. I'm just really tired of all the books being inter-related. I suspect at some point in the future we'll have the Vanza people and Zamar inserted somewhere (Joshua DOES mention meditation with a candle and martial arts...can either be far behind?)

Obviously I'm alone in this because JAK seems to be doing well in sales and reviews, but I have to admit that I am thinking of no longer buying the books, just waiting for my turn on the library waiting list. I had been buying them simply because they are very re-readable, but I have so many I've enjoyed in the past andI can re-read, I'm not sure I "need" new ones if they are all going to be the same...

This second book in the series does not disappoint. None of Amanda Quick's (Jayne Castle, Jayne Ann Krentz) books ever do. This story follows Beatrice Lockwood from her position as Miranda the Clairvoyant to her new profession as an investigator for the Flint & Marsh agency. In that capacity she meets the enigmatic Joshua Gage, a scarred and lamed veteran of the spy game. Their story is exciting and romantic, as usual for Ms. Krentz' books. I enjoyed it immensely.
