If you like Daphne du Maurier's classic REBECCA, you'll enjoy WHERE ALL THE DEAD LIE by J.T. Ellison.

While Ellison's novel may have shadows of REBECCA, it's in a world of its own with unique twists and turns to keep you wondering.

Not having read any of the prior books in this series, I can honestly say new readers will have no problem keeping up in this 7th installment of the Taylor Jackson series. While this story is built on the outcome of a prior book, there is enough background given. In fact, not knowing all the details of the prior case added extra mystery for me.

A good portion of the book is told from the thoughts of the main character, Nashville (TN) homicide lieutenant Taylor Jackson, who has lost her speech. The author does a wonderful job of putting the reader in Taylor's place. The reader feels the frustrations of being unable to speak while having much to say.

Taylor is recovering after a terrible case left her shot in the head, a fellow officer's eye mutilated and her best friend kidnapped and tortured causing her to lose her unborn child. Left unable to speak, Taylor feels guilt and pain from the ordeal. With her own demons closing in, Taylor accepts the offer of Memphis Highsmythe to visit his ancestral home in the Scottish Highlands. She goes despite the concerns of her fiancé.

As the story unfolds from there readers will find themselves wondering if Taylor is losing her mind or if someone is out to get her by driving her mad. While you may figure out who is behind the troubles, there are still some surprises in store at the end.

Joyce Bean does a beautiful job of narrating this suspenseful tale. She brings Taylor's confusion and fears to life.

Wounded and scarred physically and psychologically, Nashville detective Taylor Jackson grapples with the aftermath of her deadly encounter with the serial killer dubbed "The Pretender." Her traumatic encounter has left her isolated emotionally from her friends and fiance, as well as literally isolated, being rendered mute by PTSD. In order to escape and put the pieces of her life back together, she accepts an invitation from colleague James "Memphis" Highsmythe to visit the Scottish highlands. There, she will enter treatment with trusted friend and therapist Maddee James at his stately home.

Taylor's fragile emotional state leaves her haunted by her own demons as well as those of Memphis, whose intentions are not-quite-honorable at best, and possibly deadly at worst. As the ghosts of their pasts, and possibly the resident ghost haunting castle, close in, Taylor finds herself locked in a battle for her sanity as well as her life.

I had the great pleasure of meeting J.T. Ellison at her Nashville book launch, and am delighted to have "Where All the Dead Lie" as an introduction to the world and characters she has created. The characters of Taylor and Memphis ring true, with their flaws, vulnerability, and dogged determination. Their chemistry is delicious, and combined with the lush setting, this is a fabulous edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller/romance/mystery rolled into one great ride.

As a Nashville native, I very much appreciate the vignettes about the Music City and will be reading more of J.T.'s work.

As this newest entry in the Taylor Jackson series opens, although the serial killer whose death ended the last book, "So Close the Hand of Death," is no longer around to continue his terror campaign, his legacy is very much alive: Both Nashville homicide lieutenant Taylor Jackson and her closest friend, medical examiner Dr. Samantha Owens Loughley ["Sam"] are still traumatized by the events which led to his death at Taylor's hand, one month earlier. [The two women's jobs are described by the author thusly: "Taylor protected the living inhabitants of Nashville; Sam uncovered the secrets of its dead."] Taylor suffers from a combination of PTSD and guilt, in addition to the aftermath of the gunshot to the head which she sustained, following which she was put in a medically induced coma and then didn't waken for another week; Sam had been horribly tormented and brutalized.

The series should probably be read in order, as there are a lot of backstory references and characters: The mysterious man known as Atlantic, the whole history of The Pretender [the aforementioned serial killer], etc. This book has an unexpected change of venue, from Taylor's native city to the UK, when her erstwhile suitor, James "Memphis" Highsmythe, the Viscount Dulsie, invites her to spend the holidays in his castle [yes, `castle!'], to help her recover from her emotional, physical and psychic wounds. Since she is experiencing some unexpected ambivalence in her relationship with Dr. John Baldwin, to whom she is now engaged - - some friction has developed over an issue having to do with his son, another part of that backstory - - she decides to accept his invitation.
