Few Hollywood books have the goods to hold up, but this one is the exception. I read it, albeit skeptically, in its small-press edition, and was drawn right in. It's chock full of the kind of detail that only an insider would know and woven into a roller-coaster of a narrative -- at turns cruel, savagely funny, and downright heartbreaking, but always immensely sympathetic. The author really captures the inner lives of the moneyed filmmaking elite without making the reader detest them (actually, there are a few contemptible characters that are fun to detest ). But the key element, about facing one's legacy, makes the story richer and more accessible than one might expect.

Lindsay Marcott has a knowing view of the sleazy and the celebrated sides of Hollywood, and in this wildly entertaining tale starring Young Hollywood royalty Hannah Doran, just out of prison for shoplifting, she takes us on a tour of the glam and not-so-glam boulevards and back alleys of the movie biz. Marcott offers rich detail and by the way, hilarious and witty writing that will satisfy both readers who want a quick fun read as well as those who savor more complex fare. The characters are colorful, the plot is fun and Marcott furnishes intelligent references and witty observations that are seamlessly integrated, where in the hands of most writers they would seem forced and obvious.

To start with, I love books (and movies) that involve many characters that intertwine with each other. The au pair that shows up in a somewhat unexpected place, the private investigator who is hired by more than one person, the friend who knows someone who knows something about someone else – they all weave together to create a wonderful story of a girl who only wanted to find out the truth.

Hannah is a former wild-child desperate for her father’s attention. It’s sad how many phone calls she makes to him and how many times she asks to see him, hoping for that one time when he actually sounds happy to hear from her. However, this is her only weakness. No matter what is thrown at her, Hannah rebounds and, despite being raised in Hollywood privilege, she has the smarts to make it on her own.

Mitch is a paparazzi-type photographer out to get photos of Hannah after her release from prison. When he shoos her away from a murder scene and hides the photographic evidence, we know he’s the hero of this story. What we don’t really know is if he’s a good guy or just a sleazy paparazzi trying to get a story.

This book is less about Hannah’s attempt to change her life than it is about the mystery of how she came to be arrested for shoplifting as well as the questions surrounding her mother’s suicide. There is also the overwhelming theme of Hannah’s relationship with her father.

The one flaw, for me, was the ending. I thought it came a bit too abruptly and without any fanfare. It just didn’t seem to line up with the rest of the book. Despite that, it was probably more realistic than anything else that could have been written (Hollywood be damned).

The Producer’s Daughter by Lindsay Marcott exposes the seamier side of Hollywood as Hannah Doran investigates the circumstances of her felony shoplifting conviction after she is released on parole.

Years earlier, in an effort to get her famous producer father’s attention, Hannah dropped out of Yale and joined the latest crop of celebrities acting badly. Her public fights with friends, out of control shopping and drunken behavior garnered his notice, but their relationship remained strained. In the present, her release from prison coincides with his plans to re-make the blockbuster hit that made him famous and he has little time for his daughter. Determined not to fall back into her old habits, Hannah is trying to rebuild her life while at the same time trying to reconnect with her father and find out what really happened on the day of her arrest. Not everyone is happy about her return and when Hannah refuses to stop digging for answers, someone is willing to go to any lengths to stop her before the shocking truth is revealed.

In the beginning, it is difficult to muster up much sympathy for Hannah. Wealthy and privileged, her behavior before her arrest is just the same as any other spoiled celebutante vying for attention. But her time in prison changed her for the better and she is much more grounded in reality upon her release. However, Hannah remains a little too naive and trusting which ultimately puts her in very dangerous situation. She is also very eager to repair her relationship with her father but he continues to put business before family.

While Hannah’s release from prison goes mostly unnoticed, paparazzi photographer Mitch Arpino is hot on her heels.
