I have read many epic polar adventures and The Ice Ship sits among the very best. It is a story of the massively built Fram, which was designed to survive being caught in the ice in order to reach its prize: the North Pole, by virtue of strong polar currents that move the massive Arctic Ocean sea ice in rotational swirls. Not only does this impeccably researched treatise on the vessel and its courageous crew recount their voyages to reach the North Pole, but also Amundsen's secretive plan to sail the Fram to Antarctica and be the first man to claim the South Pole. It is a very exciting read from start to finish and makes one reflect on the brave souls who were willing and able to endure such dangers venturing to the harshest places on Earth. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed reading of Ernest Shackleton's Endurance or Hampton Sides' recent book on the Jeanette's 19th Century expedition to reach the North Pole. The Ice Ship is cut from the same cloth.
