The kind of book you think of when you're looking for a good whale story. Lots of personality and drama, and a super read-aloud for kids even as young as 4. Another fun whale story is The Whale Comedian, which is more humorous and whimsical, but, like Humphrey, shows what kids like most: how we can be friends with these exciting sea creatures.

The kids I used to babysit used to demand that I read this one incessantly. Very well-written, well-illustrated and cute.

‘Humphrey the Lost Whale’ written by Wendy Tokuda and Richard Hall with artwork made by Hanako Wakiyama brings story for children based on actual events of one whale who got lost in Sacramento River but with people help he was able to find his way back to the sea.

The main character, a whale named Humphrey embarked on a journey from San Francisco Bay deep into the freshwater rivers north of the San Francisco and will be trapped there. But with help of kind people who gathered at the river's sides and pushed him back towards the ocean, Humphrey will be saved…

This charming story with nice illustrations is telling true story about one whale that swam under the Golden Gate Bridge and then up the Sacramento River, but because of good people was eventually saved and story ended happily. Besides interesting story, authors in their book provided lot of opportunities for kids to learn many things - difference between fresh and salt water, whale migration and human interaction with animals.

Therefore, ‘Humphrey the Lost Whale’ is besides entertaining, also an educating title which will teach children how important is to keep hope regardless of difficulties we encounter in our lives – and as such a great choice for kindergarten and preschool children.

Bought this for my sons 7th birthday. I needed it because we had been making weekly trips to the library to check this book out. We read it all the time. Truly a wonderful story about how amazing whales are. I also bought him a plush whale that looked just like Humphrey in the story. He loved the book and the stuffed whale.

I read this book as a kid and just purchased a copy for my three year old nephew. I think the target age for this book is probably a little higher, but he's a bit ahead of the curve in that regard so I'm thinking he's going to enjoy it.

This book has a lot going for it, including finely detailed illustration and writing, but the best part is that it's both true and accurate. As usual, truth is even better than fiction. It's a great account of the bizarre situation, even for adults.

Cute story, cute illustrations. I purchased this as a read-aloud book for a mom of a toddler, but it's a little longer than I expected. Perhaps not that great for a read-aloud due to the length but still a fun story. I like the maps inside the front cover and it was a cute gift to go along with a stuffed whale toy.

I first saw this book on Reading Rainbow, one of my favorite PBS shows as a kid. The story fascinated me, and I'm glad I was able to get my hands on a copy. It's about a whale who can't seem to stay with his family (which all kids can identify with at one time or another), and how the community helps him find them again.

I think this book is good because it is a true story about a lost humpback whale that goes into the Sacramento River. I like this book because we are studying marine mammals in class.
