I bought Ultimate Olympic Weightlifting for my brother, who is interested in weight training and weightlifting. This book calls itself the “complete guide from beginning to gold medal” and to hear my brother talk about- it’s right! This book is packed with information and helpful tips to help even the very beginners. The book begins with introductions to Olympic weight lifting, detailing the history and background of the sport. The book then contains three different programs: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. These programs are detailed with what to do and how to continue. The rest of the book is filled with the exercises that make up these programs. These exercises are described in simple, easy-to-understand instructions, accompanied by step-by-step photographs. I generally like to read a book before I give them to family or friends so I know what they’re getting is quality. I was expecting this book to be complicated and confusing, because I’m unfamiliar with Olympic weight lifting, however, I was pleasantly surprised! I really appreciated the way these instructions were written. They were detailed enough to get a vision of what the exercise was, but simple enough to prevent confusion. I really enjoyed this book. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in weight lifting.

Super informative. I'm not looking to train on an intense level, just improve overall strength (and possible impress my boyfriend and out-lift him).

The first thing this book clarified is the difference between "lifting weights" and "weightlifting." Weightlifting is what this book entails. It's the snatch and the clean and jerk one sees the athletes do on the Olympics.

What's awesome in this book is that the author, Dave Randolph supplies the reader with Phases for their training. There are three different phases. Each if those phases are designed to train in technique. In phase 1, there is hardly in any weight used at all, the reader asked to use things like PVC pipe to ensurensure they are doing proper lifting. I really like that because Randolph wants to make sure no one starts into lifting and runs into serious injury.

Randolph supplies the reader with three different workout sections during each of the three phases, which are broken down to a month per section. There is the warm-up, main workout and conditioning to finish up each workout session. I think authors in other books I have read primarily focus on the lift, but not the overall for the reader. Randolph's perspective has been very refreshing.

I was looking for something to assist with programming for Olympic Lifting. While this has some good workouts for overall fitness which incorporate a lot of Olympic Lifts, or variations, it's heavy on kettlebell training. The author's background from what I gathered from the book itself and the Internet is in kettlebell training. I was looking to get stronger at the Olympic lifts. While this book does have some good routines, it strikes me as more of a fitness focused book as opposed to performance focused. That is, good for teaching you some workouts, but not so much for promoting optimal performance at the two Olympic lifts.
