I could read anecdotes about "Teddy Ballgame" all day long, it's like eating fresh popcorn---very entertaining and addictive. I will say this, though, some of the old-timers who were being interviewed and reliving their experiences with Ted (some of them very short, like one at-bat) are not the classic "tale-spinners" that we kind of expect retired old ballplayers to be. In other words, they're BORING! The worse are those who apparently just responded to a brief questionnaire with answers that sometimes were literally just one word:

Q: "Was Ted Williams the greatest baseball player you ever saw?"

A: "No."

Come on! "Yes", "No" or "No Comment", I'll take any answer but please explain your opinion just a little bit!

Full disclosure. The author and my last names are not a coincidence, he is my brother. But I stand by my rating as do all of my friends that I have recommended this book to. One of them emailed me: "Great stories! Some of the most interesting details I've read in a sports book in years". Here is my quick take:

Bob Feller won 266 games in the major leagues and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. Hal Raether's record in the majors was 0-0. He pitched a total of four innings. But both of these players have stories to tell about Ted Williams, one of the greatest hitters in the history of baseball. In Mr. Raether's first ever game, he pitched to Williams. His story is three and a half pages, just a little shorter then his four innings of pitching. And that is the beauty of "Facing Ted Williams". The greats and the unknowns all have stories to tell. These guys are all getting up there in years (some have passed away recently) yet they recall with (what I think is) amazing detail of their encounters with Ted Williams. In fact, I think the stories from the guys that just had a cup of coffee in the bigs are the best. Guys that seem to be happy recalling those old memories and of how great a hitter Williams really was. Not only that but to hear about how Williams would talk to and encourage many of these players is interesting as many people think of him as being sort of a curmudgeon, especially with the press.

I know Dave worked hard getting all these interviews together and the book is a testament to his hard work and research. Any baseball fan will love it.

A perfect book for the start of baseball season, Facing Ted Williams does a great job of presenting Williams from the perspective of his peers. The author does a great job of staying out of the way of the players' stories, while providing useful stats and subtle corrections to 50+ year old reminiscences in the footnotes. To my surprise, some of the most interesting stories were from players that faced Williams only once or twice. A joy to read, both to show the mindset of the ballplayers of that age and to learn more about the mythic Williams.

Facing Ted Williams is a novel idea, engagingly executed. Heller rounds up hundreds of old time ballplayers, from stars to who? and gets personal reflections about the Splendid Splinter that are warm, funny, illuminating and that show us a side of Williams that I never knew existed. If you're a Ted Williams fan, or just a baseball fan, get this book.

After the first couple of stories, it's very repetitive. Gets quite boring actually. It's fun at the beginning, listening to the stories and memories of other ballplayers. But how often can you read the same thing over and over and over again?
