I received Inside Straight as a gift at Christmas and devoured the book by the New Year. Herrmann's writing style keeps things lively, and his clear-eyed takes on the realities of legal practice are informative and entertaining. The book contains comments culled from the blog which make it even more engaging. A great book for young lawyers to gain insight about how partners and clients think, and what they expect from associates. Probably a good book for lawyers at law firms looking to develop business and build their profile as well. Overall, I strongly recommend this book.

This book is a well organized collection of years of blog posts that Mr. Hermann has written for his column at AboveTheLaw.com. As a commercial litigator, a good chunk of my business comes from in-house counsel, so I purchased this book hoping to gain more insight as to how my team can better serve our clients. This book delivers that.

While some of Mr. Hermann's advice is common sense, approximately a third of the content provoked creative thought for business development as well as associate training, so the book provides some useful takeaways. For more seasoned practitioners, the book is a nice refresher on aspects of client service that one would do well to remember, but for me, it helped validate some of our firm's practices as being productive to an in-house counsel. Perhaps the most useful aspect of the book is that it shortens the learning curve for less experienced lawyers, because it provides an entertaining tutorial on certain aspects of the business of practicing law without some of the effort one must put forth to get there. That said, you don't fully appreciate Hermann's wisdom unless you have put in the years of client service, as it gives you valuable perspective with which to view matters.

Overall, the book is entertaining and a quick read, so I recommend it without reservation. Nice job, Mr. Hermann. Feel free to give me a call here in Houston when Aon needs someone who, after reading your book, is fully ready to give you just what you want in client service. :)
