Saw this for a bit more $$ in Lowes and was happy to find it cheaper on Amazon. Hubby hasn't been able to put it down and we'll likely buy another copy for my dad. Great guy gift for sure. Nice quality book.

The Total Outdoorsman Manual: Updated & Expanded by T. Edwards Nickens and the Editors of Field & Stream Magazine is designed to be a one stop resource for the outdoorsman whether he be a novice or experienced. Developed from publishing the magazine for decades, the information contained in this hardback book covers just about everything one would need for any outdoor endeavor. The five detailed sections to this book along with a multipage index are designed for those that don't want to sit in a camping ground with all the creature comforts of home, but instead go to the backcountry far from people and assistance.
After a forward by Field & Stream Editor Anthony Licata and an introduction by Editor-at-Large T. Edward Nickens, it is on to the sections of the book. The first section is on “camping.” After a brief introduction about the belief by T. Edward Nickens that you can separate campers into two groups--those who do just enough to get by and those who do everything letter perfect the first time (just in case)---it is on to information. From the right place to make camp, making the load of your backpack lighter, rain proofing your tent, proper cooking technique for a variety of situations, and more. This section is all about how to properly rough it while also minimizing your impact on nature. Along with detailed information and tips there are the awe inspiring pictures that make you want to throw down everything and head out the door.
It is worth noting that each section is color coded and the individual pages within a section are not numbered. Instead, the tips are numbered and that same numbering system is used for the table of contents and index.

This is a great book for short bursts of reading, such as in waiting rooms/bathrooms/by the phone while on hold, etc. It has some interesting info in it and you can open it to any page and read a short article and no need to pick up in the same place later. Good design, nice graphics and photos.

I teach Hunter Education and Safety. The book helps reinforce safety and survival techniques tought in our classes. There is also a TON of informaiton tidbits on knot tying, shelter in place and survival tips.

My husband and I originally received this book for Christmas a year ago (2012). We liked it so much that we purchased it again for a gift exchange with my family this past Christmas (2013). My brother-in-law ended up receiving this gift and loves it. It in perfect for him. He is a big fisherman. My husband hunts, enjoys camping and generally being outdoors. This is a great guide for general survival skills, hunting tips, boy scout like advice and fishing techniques. My husband's favorite thing about this outdoorsman book is detailed survival skills. Any man feels manly learning about those! Great value with lots of content.

I first checked this book out from the library and I had to read everything. It catches your eye with many well depicted illustrations and easy to follow instructions. For camping, hunting, fishing, and surviving, this book is an excellent read and worth every dollar. Did you know you could make a mug out of your coffee can? Or make a heated bed in the woods? Or save yourself from drowning in icy water? All this and much more to make you the best outdoorsman or outdoorswoman yet!

Total outdoorsman? An interesting book to pick up and entertain yourself with. Gives a lot of general information, but reading this will not make you a Les Stroud kind of guy, only real life training and experience can do that. An interesting read none the less.
