I read this collection of noir fiction set in Minneapolis and St. Paul, and absolutely love it, especially because I've also read Manhattan Noir, and enjoyed comparing how the Manhattan Noir writers and the Twin Cities Noir writers defined "noir." There's definitely an absurd, Midwestern sensibility to these stories, which I enjoyed. what really impressed me as well was that all the stories were strong, even though some of them were written by previously unpublished fiction writers. I'm glad that Akashic was able to brilliantly reveal the noir aspects behind the facade of Midwestern reticence and kindness in these short stories that anyone who understands the Midwest or would like to better understand the Midwest should read.

Although I am not a big fan of short stories there were some surprisingly good stories, with a lot that I wished were longer. There were a few that the endings just left you hanging and that was disappointing. And then there were some that just made no sense. All in all if you like short stories than this is the book for you. I received this from LibraryThing Early Reviewer

Bought a series of mystery novels set in the upper Midwest. They were - to put it kindly - the work of amateurs. Suggest trying the P.J. Tracy series
set in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Far superior in every way in writing skills, interesting and suspenseful story line and character development, etc.
