The only thing keeping Project Northwoods out of the graphic novel genre is the use of text instead of illustration. This book is action packed right from the prologue. Each new encounter had me itching to be on my feet and in the action rolling with every punch, kick, and blast the author provided.

The main focus of the story is on Arthur Loveless, a wanna be super villain, who is so good at developing impenetrable fortresses and city demolishing death rays, that the Super Villains Guild wont license him. After another failure to get licensed his [bad] day becomes everyone’s [bad] day: his girlfriend leaves him, he plays a part in Ari - one of two roommates - losing her job, and finally he ends up in the wrong place, at the wrong time, when death and destruction happen upon the Heros Guild.

Heroes are doing everything in their power to keep the peace, Villains are doing everything in their power to escape, Neutrals are getting caught in the middle, and everyone is being forced to pick sides.

Don’t let my praise of the action fool you. This novel isn’t action for action sake, but a gripping story with tidal waves of emotion. It will have you laughing out loud at quirky one liners, and reaching for a tissue when...I’m not going to spoil that.

This is not the kind of book I typically read, finding myself more commonly lost in the pages of Young Adult and Chick Lit novels, but it honestly offers a little something for everyone: conspiracy, action, mystery, drama, sexual tension, coming of age, and more.

I’m not a fan of comic books or superhero movies but I loved Project Northwoods. This book is long but

once it gets going, it never stops! There is a ton of action, great characters and room for a sequel or

two. The writer does a great job with character development (and there a lot of characters).

At times I felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster, there was laughter, tears, and plenty of suspense.

I was given an advanced reader copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

5 stars!

I honestly wasn't sure just what to expect when started Project Northwoods, but the description intrigued me. Heroism and villainy as 9-to-5 jobs? A world where both roles are filled in numbers so great they have their own political parties (not to mention news networks)? Plus, okay, I'm a sucker for anything with "Project ______." What I found upon reading was that Jonathan Charles Bruce had created a novel different from anything I'd ever read before.

The book starts out in 1965 with a bang (numerous ones, in fact, as something massive rampages through New York while heroes AND villains try to stop it), then moves ahead to the present for us to see how those events further shaped the society of an already intriguing world. The characters are distinct (and a couple of them had me distinctly wanting to punch them at times, but in a good way), and the plot unfolds in a way that gains momentum as the book continues.

It should be noted that, while I completely identify as a geek, my geek-tastes have never taken me too far into the world of comic books. (Exceptions: Watchmen and Sandman.) I found, at times, that the world-building took me a bit to catch up to as I tried to reconcile it with my own attitudes of what I was used to. But that's my problem, not the book's, and that's definitely not to say I didn't enjoy it. The way Bruce put a comic-book twist on our real-world political & media establishments (not to mention the mafia) had me grinning.

While I do wish the earlier chapters developed a bit more quickly (this is a LONG book), I nevertheless enjoyed where they took me. Bruce has done a great job of taking the comic book medium and making it work in a novel format.

...Er, no pun intended.

I am always willing to dive into a good book, regardless of whether the author is new or not. Project Northwoods did not disappoint in the storyline - very creative and inventive and a great take on the classic "super-hero vs. villain" theme. I felt there were undertones of many of the marvel and dc universes throughout both the characters and world Bruce has created - only shifted and melded together into something uniquely different and much more entertaining. The story progresses well and keeps the reader engaged from start to finish. The "bestowed" have powers that range from god-like to quite mundane, making the world all the more realistic, and the characters all the more interesting. As another reviewer noted, it would make an excellent graphic novel as well.

The book easily could have been divided into two, or possibly even three, novels. It is lengthy, but fans of the later Harry Potter books or anything by G.R.R. Martin are comfortable with novels of this length. I think this novel does a fantastic job of bridging the very present gap between YA fiction (like the Percy Jackson books) and classic adult sci-fiction both with its overall theme, main characters, and the world concept. I think it appeals to a very broad audience.

My only complaint was that I thought there was a bit too much swearing (and this is a personal preference, I know. Many readers do not have any sort of problem with it) but overall - I give the book 4 stars. It was a creative, fun, and in more than one place, emotionally gut-wrenching tale of good vs. evil and the grey in-between. At the end of the story, you find yourself looking forward to the sequel (hoping for one starring Zombress!) and asking yourself what exactly makes a hero.
