I would give this book six stars if that were an option! It lays out with terrible brilliance the depths of incompetence and guile displayed by many layers and facets of our society when freed from adversarial scrutiny and transparent review.

The Warren Commission stirred these demons and coddled them, but from local police to the FBI and from local media to the New York Times, from local judiciary to the Commission itself, there were few who raised voices of integrity and those who did were shouted down.

The machine that found Lee Harvey Oswald guilty and itself innocent failed in the long run to do so. The search for the murderers of President Kennedy was so paralyzed that it may not succeed.

This author worked very hard and very long to present a comprehensive and detailed and very convincing study of the sad farce that played out around Kennedy's death, and she deserves the gratitude of the United States and it's citizens.

This book has hundreds of concerns, all carefully documented by data in the Warren Report, and insightful comments on what should have been studied but was not.The author allows the reader to examine the data for her or himself, and reach their own conclusions. She is repeatedly careful to say she does not give her own conclusions. She does not harp on what might be simple mistakes in the huge Warren Report, she looks at deeper questions of how the Warren Report approached the data, and the findings are disquieting.

I have read online some savage critics of this book, and all are attacks on the author, not the book's content. So what if the author was leftist, had emotions, was interested in UFOs and had a strong personality? This is very much the kind of person needed: the Warren Report needs to be read by an independent thinker.I can not help but think there was a great deal of sexism in the critics of this book and of this person.

Originally published in 1967, this masterpiece by Sylvia Meagher was, along with Mark Lane's "Rush to Judgment," at the forefront of the first-generation criticism of the Warren Report. Ms. Meagher preceded this book by preparing a subject matter index of the report and its accompanying 26 volumes of exhibits, which astonishingly the Commission failed to provide to the public. Truly a herculean task on her part.

Working solely from the report, and comparing its conclusions with the testimony and other evidence contained in the exhibits, she convincingly demonstrates over and over again how the attorneys who authored the report manipulated the truth, omitted key evidence, and glossed over repeated inconsistencies in the FBI and Dallas Police investigations in order to reach the preconceived finding that Oswald acted alone in the president's assassination. We now know the Warren Commission was no impartial tribunal but instead an exercise in raw power politics, but this was not so obvious in the 1960s when Americans were more trusting of their government.

This book has been the foundation for so much of the new research which has now led us tantilizingly close to the truth in this case, and it is just as relevant today as it was upon its release. Getting to read the section on the Odio incident ("The Proof of the Plot") alone is worth the purchase price.

Highly recommended to all readers willing to confront the truth about what really happened 50 years ago in Dallas.

I don’t know how I missed it, having read most of the good early critics of the Warren Report, but I never read Sylvia Meagher’s “Accessories After the Fact,” and that is a pity because this book is one of the most important ever written on the Kennedy assassination.

Ms. Meagher’s topic is exclusively “The Warren Report,” its contents and the means and methods used to arrive at them. Ms. Meagher had a unique advantage over some other critics and analysts: she not only studied the entire 26 volumes of “Hearings and Exhibits” published to support the single-volume summary report, she had undertaken the monumental task of creating an index to “Hearings and Exhibits.” The Commission, as was its bizarre and confusing way in so many things, published this massive collection of evidence separately with no meaningful organization and no means to search or study it, just tens of thousands of documents jammed into 26 covers like a tidy pile of recycling. The summary volume, “The Report,” therefore does not follow the most elemental academic practice of citing an organized body of evidence for its claims and assertions. It was almost as though the supporting documents were published to impress and reassure the public, safe in the knowledge that few would ever try studying them and that the few who did would find the task impossibly frustrating.

Ms. Meagher’s admirable indexing work not only created a powerful tool for her own use and that of others but gave her in 1967, the first publication date for “Accessories,” an almost unrivalled knowledge, perhaps matched only by Harold Weisberg. But Weisberg was a fairly poor writer, and his books, most famously, “Whitewash,” often are awkward and replete with typographical errors. Ms.Read more ›
