For the last seventy years, the breadth and scope, the intricacies, and the global consequences of WWII have dominated much of Western literary and historical study. And yet, despite the vast supply of scholarship, most accounts focus narrowly— and often exclusively— on the actions of the Allies and the Axis, while neglecting other equally important agents in the global conflict. Hans Moederzoon van Kuilenburg’s The Silent Heroes, however, forcefully rights this perennial wrong— illuminating Holland’s oft forgotten involvement in WWII: and its freedom fighters who resisted the Nazis at every turn.
An artfully penned personal narrative, The Silent Heroes chronicles the author’s own experience as a ten year old girl in Amsterdam during the National Socialist occupation— from the quick and gruesome toppling of the Dutch military to the Nazis’ ultimate expulsion from Holland. Throughout this dark and troublesome period of Scandinavian history, Ms. Kuilenburg watched as many of her fellow countrymen capitulated— while others, including her own father, fought back. As the Third Reich implemented exacting occupational programs— which eventually led to the death of 30,000 Dutch citizens— silent heroes, working through clandestine channels, sabotaged the German forces and, at the peril of their lives, worked to feed, clothe, and protect their fellow Hollanders. It is this story, so often untold, which, brought to light in stunning prose, discloses the bravery and integrity of the Dutch during WWII— and how against all odds, they resisted the tyranny of a seemingly unstoppable superpower.

Very, interesting ,and enlightening book, many things I did not
,
know about the time of the Nazi occupation of Holland,

the book meet all my expectations, and I would most certainly

recommend this book , I feel every one should read,

A terrible time in the history of the world, and should make us thankful

for the courage of these wonderful people,

We should all be vigilante and aware ,so that this never happens again

Thank you Hans, for sharing your most frightening and difficult time with us,

Michael Lamsley, Chino Valley Arizona U.S.A
