"Guy Town by Gaslight" raises the bar for entertainment in historical writing. Richard Zelade's readable style brings fascinating facts about old-time Austin to the printed page for the first time. As a writer, Zelade understands the virtues of colorful specificity over pages of dull sweeping generalizations. As an academically trained historian, he has done more than anyone yet to show us the sometimes harsh, often surprising reality of Austin's gaslight era. Vice, crime, and prostitution's place in society in the old days or any day are troubling topics to address. Zelade has done so with care, style, and grace, avoiding judgment and demonstrating the clearer perspective that time can provide. He is a skilled illustrator, too, augmenting his writing with well-chosen, original archival material plus unique items from his private collection. "Guy Town" is well researched and well expressed, and should surely put paid to those who romanticize the Victorian era in Austin and in general. Also it's very refreshing to read a historical treatment of Austin that focuses on some aspect other than the usual cowboys and Indians. The Comanches, cattlemen, and all the rest of it are fine, but as this intriguing book demonstrates, they are far from the whole picture of Texas life in the old days. A born-and-bred Texan and longtime Austinite, Zelade proves willing and able to give his readers an intimate, intelligent look at the good, the bad, and the sexy in his hometown -- even by gaslight!

History isn't boring when you walk into Guy Town with Richard Zelade. He brings the scenes alive and tells you entertaining stories about the characters who lived in Ward I--Guy Town, Austin. Walk with the city marshal Ben Thompson and hear what life was like during the 1880's, what the crimes were, and who committed them. Richard is not only an entertaining author, but his material comes from careful research based on newspaper accounts, magazine articles, and books from that time period. This is a book penned by an avid scholar of Austin history and its people. Go back in time with him and you might discover that our "Austin Weird" existed in that time, too. A lady was arrested on the streets for wearing pants like a man. Laugh with Richard's tales and enjoy a well-written book.
