Concisely covers the basics but doesn't provide much detail. Useful for a psychiatry rotation but probably not as a prescriber's reference. The Kindle version has some typographical problems. Figure 6F is missing and Figure 6E is repeated in its place. Hope this can be fixed as 6F has some important information.

Those of us who love the art and science of psychopharmacology are always on the look-out for the gems which will achieve a place in our libraries. This book, a must-have for any psychiatrist who works with both adults and children is laid out in a most readable and sensible manner. From pharmacokinetics to pharmacodynamics and clinical pearls, it leaves nothing to chance in providing all that one needs to practice safely the art, backed by science, of prescribing for children and adolescents, a contentious subject at the best of times. I very much enjoyed it and feel more confident in my prescribing for the younger patients in my care. Dr Seán Ó Domhnaill, MB DPM MRCPsych MCPsychI MSc PG Dip. CBT, Consultant Psychiatrist s.i. Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

Dr. Preston makes the subject understandable without talking down to the reader. I am a professor in a graduate school of psychology and teach psychopharmacology to students who are preparing to be psychotherapists, but mostly don't have a science background. All of his psychopharmacology texts are comprehensive and entirely useful in clinical practice.

If you're expecting to read something new, this isn't the book to read. I was hoping to get some good pharmacology information regarding interactions or at least receptor preferences, but this is a very basic review that most child psychiatrists would consider extremely basic. If you're not a child psychiatrist, this might be a great book for you. My colleagues however should opt for the McVoy and Findling text published a couple years ago...

Very difficult to immediately look up a specific drug. An index list of specific drugs, as opposed to categories, would prove more efficient and helpful. I found Kaplan and Sadock's Pocket Handbook of Psychiatric Drug Treatment a much more helpful resource.
