Format: Paperback
I was lucky enough to discover Greg early on in my college career. Many professors have the capacity to change your grade, the good ones can change your attitude, and the great ones change your entire approach to learning.

I walked into Greg's first class as a sophomore with aspirations of being a sports broadcaster, and I left with not only a different major and a different career path but a different mindset; a conception that I had the capacity to change the world.

Greg fosters a tight knit community of excellence. He has an unusual ability to unite students in a way that creates a hands-on classroom dynamic but also translates to long term friendships outside of the classroom.

More than any professor or mentor, Greg has been a source of inspiration and constant council, someone who invests seemingly immeasurable time in your success and at the same time serves as a mentor and council for hundreds of former students while building the same relationships with his current students.

His teaching style explains why students take a second and third and fourth class with him. Instead of lecturing or testing whether or not students have done their work, he skates past those rudimentary practices, asking students to find meaning and take bold stances, to analyze, and most importantly to act upon their knowledge.

Because of his approach, his experience, and his position, Greg is uniquely qualified to give this advice (he calls it "practical advice"), as he does to begin each one of his classes.

There is a reason he calls it "practical.

While college should be about quenching a thirst for knowledge, inspiration, and direction, too often it becomes about racing to the finish in pursuit of a paycheck. Prior to meeting Greg Goodale, my experience was much closer to the latter - a misguided attempt at compiling a passable resume. I just wanted any job out of school that would earn me enough money to spend plenty of time at the bars.

Greg changed all that.

He challenged me to question norms. He called me on my BS. He told me point blank that I could change the world if I set my mind to it.

I entered his class in my third year, probably hungover, definitely ready to coast. After a few classes, I was inspired to want more.

Greg's daily advice fostered an environment where students taught each other to open up and dive deep into difficult questions. It challenged even the most confident young minds to rethink their preconceptions and to never settle for mediocrity. For once, it made us eager to attend a class.

I have never grown as much personally and professionally as I did under Greg's tutelage. I have lifelong friends, earned through his fantastic exchange of ideas and I still think of his advice whenever I make a difficult decision.

The fact that his thoughts and recommendations are now available to the masses is a wonderful thing. You will not find Greg preachy or condescending, rather you'll realize his practical advice is there to help you tap into the unique abilities you already possess.

No teacher or mentor has had the incredible impact on my life that Greg has. His unique ability to inspire young people towards greatness is something I hope I can emulate one day.

Trust someone who has seen it first hand when I tell you that you won't regret getting this book. I couldn't possibly recommend Greg's work more.

Humorous and accurate without being preachy. Greg doesn't belabor a point, nor does he paint with broad strokes. He speaks honestly, and he doesn't play-down some fundamental truths in life, especially about the very human flaws we'll see in ourselves and those around us. Whether we catch it from well-intentioned peers or those with a position of power over us, Greg gives very real and practical advice you can use (including an answer to the infamous interview question: what's your worst trait?). My only regret is that he didn't hit me over the head with the book years ago!

No one is ever ready for all the advice at once, so Greg breaks it down to reflect our nature at different points -- fresh out of high school and into college -- later in college but still pretty clueless and about to join the workforce. It's a book you can read over again, because it'll mean something more every time. I bought a copy for a former student of mine, and he loved it. I'm about to graduate grad school, and I think I could use a refresher as well. Happy reading!

I chose to give this book 5 stars because Professor Goodale was a 5 star Professor. He changed my feelings towards learning all together. To this day I'am so sad that I did not discover him until my last semester. So many people told me that he was such a hard teacher but no one ever told me he was a life changing teacher. (Probably because they didn't want me to take their spot in his classes, which filled up so quickly)

I' m just happy that I got to have a semester with him and my fellow students. The students in that class were all brilliant All in their own ways and it was wonderful feeling brilliant with them. I noticed that a few students from my class have been put into his list of people who helped him succeed in writing the book. I congratulate them for being apart of such an accomplishment :) Greg Goodale taught us how to push ourselves outside the box and be able to discuss things that we may have never spoken about if he hadn't pushed us.

I believe that anyone could read this book. You don't have to just be a student in college because as Professor Goodale would probably believe; we are always still learning new things are still always students.
